Overview of Lessons
  • Level Intermediate
  • Aims-Evaluate WWW sites as resources for
    research. -Search for information on the
    WWW.
  • Class Time 60 minutes over 3 sessions.
  • Preparation Time 60 minutes.
  • Resources -Computer with graphical browser for
    each student. -Internet
    access. -Hypertext authoring
    software (optional).
    -Projection system (optional).
  • Rationale for lesson This activity helps
    students apply library research skills to
    research using the Internet by helping them to
    generate topics and to judge the usefulness of
    WWW sites as resources.

Session 1
  • Review research process, generate broad research
    topics.
  • Divide class into groups and have students
    generate sub-topics.
  • Generate a list of Web resources by using web
    search engines (like Yahoo, Webcrawler, Lycos,
    etc.).
  • Make a worksheet to evaluate sites (include name
    of site, URL, appropriateness, criteria on which
    judgement is based.

  • Review use of graphical browser with students.
  • Handout worksheet and demonstrate its use by
    looking at and evaluating a few sites together
    with students.
  • Have students fill in rest of worksheets and
    prepare to discuss answers.

  • Discuss student answers as a class.
  • List criteria used to judge sites on blackboard.
  • Remind students that different research topics
    lead to different resources on web.
  • Stress that students should analyze the sites
    appropriateness for particular research project.
