26Class Size Reduction Planning
- Planning Year (contd)
- Flexibility in how the school implements the
interim benchmarks of 1/3 and 2/3 - Method must clearly demonstrate that the
reduction in each of the interim years
constitutes one-third of the progress needed to
meet the CSR target required by the end of the
2010-11 school year
26
27Class Size Reduction Planning
- Planning Year 2007-08 (contd)
- Due to flexibility in meeting interim CSR
targets, county offices will need to verify the
methodology that the school used to define their
1/3 and 2/3 CSR implementation plan

33
34Intermission 1
- 10 minute break
- E-mail questions to
- QEIATA_at_lacoe.edu
34
35Class Size Reduction Reporting
- Monitoring of class size reduction is based on
Average Daily Enrollment - Similar to reporting done for
- K-3 CSR
- Morgan-Hart CSR
36Class Size Reduction Reporting
- But there are some unique attributes to QEIA
- Applies to core subjects at middle and high
school - Targets vary by grade level
37Class Size Reduction Reporting
- Cumulative Number of Days Enrolled
- Grades K-8 Beginning of the school year through
April 15 - Grade 9-12 Entire school year as put into units
of months of instruction - First month of the school year or from the first
month that a new class was created to the last
month ending on or before June 30
38Class Size Reduction Reporting
- Grades K-8 Reporting Steps
- Collect total enrollment by day for all
classrooms within the grade level from first day
of school until April 15 - For combination classes, the grade level with
most number of students becomes the grade level
of the class for QEIA purposes
39Class Size Reduction Reporting
- Grades K-8 Reporting Steps
- Sum the active daily enrollments and divide the
sum by the total number of class days through
April 15. - The result is the average class size for the
class for the year.
40Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Grades 9-12 Reporting
- This is more complicated because there are
usually more multi-grade level classes - Grade levels by core subjects have different
targets - Different types of scheduling options such as
block schedules and courses spanning less than
the full year
41Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Grades 9-12 Reporting Steps
- For each core course class within each grade
level - Calculate Active Monthly Enrollment
- Cumulative number of students enrolled each day
divided by the number of instructional days in
the month
42Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Grades 9-12 Reporting Special Circumstances
- Partial Year Course When calculating active
monthly enrollment adjust the number of
instructional days if period is less than one
month or a partial month
43Class Size Reduction Reporting
- Elective Courses
- Non-core courses may not exceed the ratio from
2005-06 (Monitoring will begin in 2010-11)
44Class Size Reduction Reporting
- District Student Information Systems
- Capable of providing class size reports for
average daily enrollments - The Assistance Centers will be collecting and
distributing information about how to use your
student information system to produce necessary
data
45Class Size Reduction Reporting - Example
46Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Monitoring at the end of 2008 - 09
- Substantially Met
- 2 points at least 1/3 of the way in meeting CSR
requirement - 1 point at least 1/6 of the way in meeting the
CSR requirement - 0 points less than 1/6 of the way in meeting
the CSR requirement
46
47Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Monitoring at the end of 2008 09
- Middle School Example
2008-09 Implementation Plan Reduce core subjects
at grades 6-8 by 1/3
At least 1/3 of the way in meeting CSR requirement
47
48Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Monitoring at the end of 2008 09
- Middle School Example
2008-09 Implementation Plan Reduce core subjects
at grades 6-8 by 1/3
48
49Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Monitoring at the end of 2008 09
- High School Example
2008-09 Implementation Plan Full CSR at 9th grade

51County Superintendents Oversight
- Reporting Findings
- Reporting Form Template
- Letter to District
- Letter to Superintendent of Public Instruction

51
52Intermission 2
- 10 minute break
- E-mail questions to
- QEIATA_at_lacoe.edu
52
53Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Unique Scenarios
- The school reduced class size during 2005-06
using High Priority Grant funds. As a result,
QEIA CSR targets have resulted in very low QEIA
CSR targets.
53
54Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Unique Scenarios
- The school was reconfigured in the base year and
added 6th grade. As a result, the CSR target for
6th grade is very low.
54
55Class Size Reduction Monitoring
- Due to the complexity of CSR requirements it is
essential to - Schedule Pre-Monitoring meetings with districts
and schools to establish CSR target agreements - Provide assistance with interim benchmarks and
implementation plan - Provide information regarding required end of
year documentation
