The Russian Revolution
  • First Part
  • Started in February of 1917.
  • Resulted in the overthrow of the czar.
  • People were unhappy the way the czar and his
    government were running the country.
  • They were also upset over their participation in
    the war.
  • The Russian army was not able to be very
    effective in the war and stopped their
    involvement.

The Russian Revolution
  • PART 2
  • It took place in October of 1917 and is also
    called the Bolshevik Revolution.
  • It was led by Vladimir Lenin.
  • This part of the Russian Revolution was more
    violent than the first.
  • After the revolution, there was a civil war that
    lasted more than 2 years. The Bolsheviks
    retained control.

The United States Enters the War
  • The U.S. entered the war in June of 1917.
  • Up to this point, the U.S. had been lending large
    amounts of money to the Allies in their fight
    against the Central Powers.

Treaty of Versailles
  • An armistice is a temporary stopping of fighting
    or a truce.
  • It took place in WWI on November 11th.
  • 4 Requirements of Germany according to the Treaty
    of Versailles
  • Germany had to accept full responsibility for the
    war.
  • Germany had to give up territory to surrounding
    countries.
  • Germany surrendered its overseas colonies and
    made their armed forces smaller.
  • Germany had to pay huge reparations to the
    countries it harmed.

International Economy
  • GERMANY Their economy was ruined by the Treaty
    of Versailles.
  • FRANCE Became a dominant European economy for
    many years.
  • BRITAIN With Germany no longer a threat,
    Britain could develop its colonies and obtain
    their natural resources.
  • How did Germany still remain powerful?
  • Germanys industrial areas were not taken away.
    Therefore, Germany was able to rebuild its
    economy. Within 20 years, Germany was a major
    European power.

The Nazis in Germany
  • Poverty caused by unemployment led the people of
    Germany to lose faith in their government.
  • On January 30th, 1933, Adolf Hitler (leader of
    the Nazi Party) became Chancellor of Germany.
  • The Nazis gained support by blaming Germanys
    problems on the ideas of Communists and Jewish
    people.
  • Hitler made 2 promises to the Germans
  • That their country would create jobs.
  • That their country would grow to be the most
    powerful.
