• Pharisee A lay group who tended to make the
  practice of religion a matter of following the
  law. This often resulted in centering on self and
  made the Kingdom dependent on themselves and not
  on Gods goodness and love.

• Sadducees Lay members of the upper class who by
  New Testament times were running the affairs of
  the nation. They collaborated with the Greek and
  Roman occupiers which assured their position of
  power. They played a leading part in bringing
  about Christs death.
