  • This shrine was built in Jerusalem by the 9th
    caliph between 688-691.
  • Built not only to proclaim the supremacy of
    Islam, but to ensure that new followers of Islam
    would not be tempted by Christianity. SYMBOLIC
    STATEMENT!
  • One of the reasons why Jerusalem was chosen as
    the site for the Dome of the Rock because it is
    where the prophet Muhammad ascended to Heaven.
