5 Classroom Procedures and Routines
- Middle Grades Science Class
2What are Standard Operating Procedures?
- An established set of procedures to be followed
by all members of the group the standards are
addressing.
3Why have classroom procedures and routines
- Students know what to do as soon as they enter
the classroom - Students classroom time is maximized
- Students are given the opportunity for
self-management - Transition is organized
- Interruptions for explanation of routine
procedures is reduced
4I. Beginning of Class Procedures
- Attendance
- During student warm up activity, attendance will
be verified using the seating chart (see next
slide). This means all students must be in their
assigned seat. Absences will be noted in the
grade book or in the applicable computer program.
- Tardy
- Any student entering the classroom after the
second bell is considered tardy. The student
must sign in on the in-class tardy sheet. Three
tardies will result in a detention and parental
contact. Any student that is tardy more than
three minutes will need a pass to enter class.

- The Essential Question for the Day, Warm-Up
Exercise, Daily Assignment, and any homework
assignment will be displayed in a consistent
method each day. The students will transition
into this activity as soon as they enter the
classroom. Pencils, paper, books, and other
materials will be prepared at this time. Three to
four minutes will be available for this task. - Other

their hands and - be acknowledged in order to move about the
classroom. - Signal for Attention

the top line on the left side of the paper as
follows - Assignment name
8Instructional Procedurescontinued

- Student Talking
- There will be no talking during procedural time
(warm-up) or during direct instructional time.
Raised hands from students will be used for
talking during this time. Open constructive
conversations will be allowed during class group
work, team work, and lab activities. - Post class work activity
- After all class work, lab assignments,
worksheets, test, and etcetera, the student may
quietly read or complete assignments for other
classes.
9III. Room Areas
- Supply Room
- Only the teacher is allowed to enter the supply
room. All necessary supplies will be on the
teachers lab table and should be picked up by
each groups gopher at the start of the period. - Sink
- The sink is to be rinsed out before each lab
starts and should be soaped down and washed by
each group, as well as the lab desk, at the end
of class. - Lab
- There will be a lab unit each week. Unless
otherwise noted, labs will be held on Thursdays.
Each group should have four members, each member
will have one of the following jobs leader,
gopher, recorder/reporter, and researcher/monitor.
Jobs will be rotated every week within the
group.
10Room Areascontinued
- Bookshelf/Reading Relaxing Areas
- This area is open for use upon completion of
assignments, tests, or in the event that there is
free time. There are books on a variety of
topics for your enjoyment as well as a few
randomly placed beanbag chairs. If a problem
arises due to seating, the chairs can and will be
removed. - Computer Area
- Due to space limitation we only have a few
computers available, one per group. The
computers are to be used primarily for any lab
research by the groups researcher. They may
also be used upon completion of assignments and
tests or during free time. However, only one
group member may be at the computer at a time.
11IV. End of Class Procedures
- Putting away supplies
- Group supplies are to be put away in the
location they were found by each groups gopher.
This may be done as soon as the lab or assignment
is complete, but may not be put away any later
than five minutes prior to the end of class.
Individual assignment supplies are to be put away
upon completion and also no later than five
minutes prior to the end of class. - Organizing materials for the next class
- This will occur in the last five minutes of each
class. Each groups gopher is responsible to
turning in the lab or assignment and helping
reorganize supplies on the teachers lab desk.
Everyone else should be making sure they have
their individual assignments or homework turned
in. Students are also to clean up around their
desks and put their hanging file folders back if
they had removed them. The group leaders are
responsible for the pick up any worksheets or
homework that is to be done that night for the
group. - Dismissing Class
- Student are dismissed by the teacher at the end
of the class period, not by the bell. As long
as everyone performs their team role than the
classroom will be ready for dismissal on time.
12V. Other Procedures
- Fire drill
- When the fire alarm sounds all students will
stop talking immediately and quietly exit the
classroom to the left and out the hallway door.
Students will stay in assigned table groups while
attendance is taken by the teacher. - Lockers
- Students are not permitted to go to their
lockers during classroom time. Students are
given a break between each class period which can
be used to go to lockers. - Restroom and water fountain breaks
- Other than emergency situations, students are
not permitted to leave the classroom to use the
bathroom. Drinks will not be permitted in the
classroom and should be obtained between class
periods. Using the restroom and getting a drink
should be conducted during between class period
breaks.
13Other Procedurescontinued
- Substitute folder/procedures
- Students will give substitute teachers the same
respect that is afforded the regular teacher.
The substitute will have team based activities in
a folder for students to work on during their
stay. If students do not display appropriate
classroom conduct during a substitutes stay, the
team based work will be replaced with worksheets
to be completed individually and silently. - Other
- Other classroom procedures and routines will be
added throughout the school year as needed and
presented to students for comprehension of
appropriate and expected compliance.
14Can you think of any other classroom procedures
or routines that should be addressed?
