leading role in this year's Leonid MAC mission.
The Centro de Astrobiologia (CSIC/INTA) at
Torrejon de Ardoz, near Madrid, will host the
2002 Leonid MAC deployment and participate key
experiments on the DC-8 Airborne Laboratory. The

METEORITES acid-insoluble polymer, hydrocarbons,
monocarboxylic acids, primary alcohols,
aldehydes, ketones, amines, urea, purines, amino
acids and carbonates. COMETS H, C, O, CN, CH,
OH, H2O, CN, CH, OH, N2, CO, CO2 and
complex organic molecules such as CH3CN, H2CO,
and HCO

The GIOTTO probe traversed Halley's comet at high
speed and was able to record mass spectra of
impacting dust particles. The majority of the
dust grains were found to be largely
carbonaceous, justifying the description "CHON"
material from their elemental compositions.
Fingerprints of organic matter were found in the
trail of this 1999 Leonid fireball, which endured
to 55 kilometers (34 miles) above Earth, much
lower than most Leonid meteors.
