5 Adoption of 3G/UMTS IMS in NGN
- IP Multimedia Subsystem generally establish NGN
requirements for conversational services - With Release 6 becomes applicable to a range of
access network types - Access independence
- Whole Telecom industry benefits
- Market stimulation, decreasing costs (thanks to
shared development deployment costs) - One Development path, one NGN
6_NGN Release 1 scope
- Consolidated by mid-2004
- Major service capabilities under consideration
include - Real time conversational services (Voice, Video
telephony) - Messaging (Instant Messaging, MMS), Presence
management - Content delivery (VOD, Video Streaming,
TV-Channel distribution) - Emulation for PSTN/ISDN migration towards NGN
- Network Architecture basis
- 3G/UMTS IMS sub-system for the support of
real-time Conversational services (SIP-based
session control) - ADSL access
- WLAN (later decision)
- Design Approach
- Pragmatic bottom-up approach for Release 1
- Top-down (TIPHON-like) approach to ensure NGN
goals
7_NGN high level Roadmap
Towards a converged Wire line and Cellular NGN
2007
2005
2006
2008
2004
2006
- Release 1 bringing video Multimedia services
- Nomadicity/user-controlled roaming
- Based on use of Access network Attachment
Subsystem - Release 2 optimizing (dynamically allocated)
resources usage - According to user subscription profile and
service use - Release 3 introducing full Mobility
- Inter-network domain nomadicity/user-controlled
roaming - Higher bandwidth access(VDSL, Wi-max )
8Leverage Global Standards for NGN
- There are a number of areas where commonality
between 3G IMS adapted to fixed NGN - SIP-based Call/session control
- Call server-Service/Application control
interfaces (ISC, Dh, Sh) - AAA (e.g. Diameter at Rf interface)
- Management
- Possible approaches are
- Define xDSL access Delta compared to relevant
stable 3GPP specs - Re-use and adapt IMS R6 specs for full TISPAN_NGN
spec - Contribute Deltas to 3GPP IMS future work
- Course of actions
- TISPAN_NGN to progress on its Release 1 work
- Discuss and define the xDSL requirements and
differences compared to 3G IMS, taking 3GPP IMS
Release 6 as the base reference - Plan a joint Workshop with 3GPP SA and CN (on
22-23 June) - Define a stable TISPAN_NGN R1 reference
architecture (by Sept. 04)
9_NGN Summary
- A strong industry demand
- For new generation Multimedia services
- For the provision a PSTN/ISDN Emulation service
- First Release of specifications by mid-2005
- Based on existing global standards
- An architecture basis consisting of a set of
subsystems - Maximising Wire line and Cellular convergence,
through adoption of 3G/UMTS IMS component for
support of conversational services - Access network attachment, Resource and admission
control sub-systems preparing for next Releases
capabilities support - TISPAN to collaborate with 3GPP
- Workshop being scheduled on 22-23 June
- To identify areas of synergy and plan future
collaboration
10Looking forward to a Global collaboration!Thanks
