Kansas-Nebraska Act
  • As people continued to move west, there was a
    need to create governments in the new
    territories.
  • Stephen Douglas created the Kansas Nebraska Act.
  • Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska
  • Contained a clause on POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY
  • The people of a territory could vote on whether
    they wanted to be a free state or a slave state.

Kansas-Nebraska Act
  • Northerners were angry that this act repealed the
    Missouri Compromise and created the possibility
    of slavery being allowed above the 36 30
    parallel.

Bleeding Kansas
  • The territory of Kansas, which was being
    considered for statehood, was flooded by both pro
    and anti-slavery supporters who came to the state
    to vote for or against it in Kansas.
  • The area became very violent earning it the name
    BLEEDING KANSAS.
  • In the end, Kansas was admitted as a free state
    in 1861.
  • The act further divided the nation and destroyed
    the Missouri Compromise .
