The Clydesdale Horse
U The Clydesdale Horse U
  • By Philippa

2
U History U
  • The Clydesdale horse traces back to Flemish
stallions which were imported into the area
around the Clyde Valley in the 18th century which
were bred to native draught horses. The
Clydesdale was bred for agricultural work and
their great strength was also used in the coal
mining industry, for forestry work and for
general draught work in the cities. In the 19th
century Clydesdale horses were exported to
Australia and New Zealand and in 1877.

U Description U
  • The colour of the Clydesdale horse is bay,
brown, roan and black. Most have white legs and
may have some white on the stomach. The feet are
wide and open, and they have long, silky hair
    below the knees.

4
U The height and weight U
  • Clydesdale horses are relatively big because they
are used in draught and they need to be able to
carry weight. The average height of a Clydesdale
is 16 18 hands high and 1700 2000 pounds in
    weight.

5
U The modern Clydesdale U
  • The Clydesdale Horse is increasingly popular as a
pleasure horse, playing an ever expanding role
in the field of recreation. Owners of acreage,
businessmen, farmers and light horse enthusiasts
are ever more aware of the challenge offered in
breeding, foaling, developing and training a
Clydesdale. As in all breeds of livestock, the
Clydesdale has gone through several changes of
emphasis over the years to meet the demands of
the times. In the 20s and 30s the demand was for
a more compact horse of late, it has been for a
    taller, hitchier horse.

6
U A Clydesdale's Diet U
  • A Clydesdales diet is like many other horses and
includes chaff and the any other requirements
like Glucosamine. Usually a diet is of relevance
to how much work the horse does.

U I have learnt... U
  • Some key things that I have learnt are that the
Clydesdale horse usually weighs more than a
standard horse because of the work that it does
    when draughting.
  • I also learnt that the Clydesdale have bigger
feet than normal horses because when they are
pulling things they need large feet to grip to
    the ground.
