  group of ungulates includes horses, tapirs, and
  rhinos. The name of their order derives from the
  fact that their middle toe is larger than the
  others, and the plane of symmetry of the foot
  passes through it, a condition called mesaxonic

  equids occur mainly in East Africa and the Near
  East to Mongolia. They inhabit a variety of
  habitats from lush grasslands and savanna to
  sandy and stony deserts.

History

• Archeological and paleontological evidence
  indicates that the horse was domesticated about
  5,000 years ago, substantially later than other
  farm animals. By that time (approximately 3,000
  B.C.E.), the dog had been our companion for 9,000
  years and we had herded goats, sheep and cattle
  for upwards of 5,000 years. The horse came late
  into our lives but lost no time in transforming
  us.

Przewalski (sha-val-ski)

• The Przewalski horse (Equus przewalski poliakov)
  is the last remaining wild species of horses.
• All other horses are either domesticated or
  descended from horses which were once
  domesticated.
• Until the mid-1990's the Przewalski was extinct
  in the wild, exterminated by hunters.
• It was originally believed that the Przewalski
  horse was discovered by the Russian explorer
  Colonel Przewalski, for whom it is named, in 1881

Appalossa

• Originated in U.S. from horses brought
• from Spain.
• They are white over hips and loins with dark
  spots. Sometimes they are white all over.
• The Nez Perce Indian tribe developed the breed in
  Idaho and Washington.

• Originated in Russia, near the Ural mountains.
• Has long silky curly hair.
• Hair sheds in summer grows back in winter.
• Can be many different colors.

• Originated in Spain.
• There are very few in the U.S. because Spain did
  not allow exports.
• Used for pleasure, jumping and bullfighting.
• Colors are bay, white and gray and black
• Cortes brought Andalusians to America for his
  conquests.

• Used for riding exhibition and as a stock horse.

• Also Known By American Albino
• The original foundation bloodline horses were
  predominantly organ breeding and stood 15.2 -
  16.2 hands weighing 1,100 - 1,300 lbs.
• Versatile, they were used for driving, farming,
  riding, jumping, dressage and circus routines
• must have pink skin and truly white coloring ...
  no slight pigmentation of hair allowed, various
  eye colors common to horses are acceptable
  including amber and very pale blue and
  parti-colored.

Gypsy Vanner

• Known as the Irish cob originated in Ireland and
  the UK. The registry was created here in the US
  in 1996 by Dennis and Cindy Thompson.
• The first two fillies to arrive in the US were
  Bat and Dolly in November of the same year.

Chincoteague Pony

• Descends from the wild horses on Assateague
  Island off the coast of Va. And Maryland.
• Were brought to Island from mainland by their
  owners to avoid taxes in the 17th century
• They are pony size 12-13 hands high, due to poor
  diet and harsh environment.
• Due to large amount of salt in diet they drink
  twice as much water as other domestic horses.
• The large amount of water they drink gives them a
  bloated look.

• the Canadian Horse remains the sturdiest and most
  acclimatized horse in Canada today. 
• They are tough, strong horses, tolerant of
  inclement weather conditions, and are extremely
  easy keepers. 
• Because of these traits, the Canadian Horse is
  often referred to as The Little Iron Horse.
• They are characterized by their finely chiseled
  heads, arched necks, and thick, long, wavy manes
  and tails all reminiscent of their Barb and
  Andalusian ancestry.

• The Mongolian horse is one of the most important

  horse breeds of China
• It is a dual-purpose horse, used primarily for
