1. Why was the city of New Orleans And the
Mississippi River important to farmers in the
1800s?
  • The city of New Orleans and the Mississippi River
are important because the river could transport
    crops to New Orleans.

2. What was Napoleons plan for Louisiana? Why
were the farmers alarmed by it?
  • Napoleons plan for Louisiana was to settle in
the Louisiana Territory with thousands of French
farmers that will raise food for the slaves who
worked on Frances sugar plantations. Americans
were alarmed by it because New Orleans was a part
of Louisiana. If napoleon closed the port to
American goods, farmers would have no way to get
    their crops to the market.

3. What deal was made in April 30, 1803? Give two
reasons why Napoleon was willing to make the deal
with the U.S.
  • The Louisiana Purchase was made on April 30, 1803
for 15 million dollars. A slave revolt had
happened in the French Caribbean, so he wouldnt
need Louisiana farmers anymore to feed them. Also
France and Britain were on the brink of war which
would mean he would lose Louisiana. So he sold it
to the Americans so he could make money off of
    it.

4. List two pros and two cons of the Louisiana
Purchase.
  • Pros
  • Doubled the size if the U.S.
  • Farmers had more land to farm.
  • Cons
  • Such a large country would be impossible to
    govern.
  • Disliked spending 15 million dollars we did not
    have.
