Introduction

• Baptism became a new word in the English Language
  in 1611 at the translation of the King James
  Version.
• The Church of England, Anglican, (Episcopalian in
  the U. S.), practiced sprinkling and pouring.

• Thus, when they came to the Greek word, baptizo
  bapti/zw, they could not use the accurate
  definition.
• Definition immerse, dip, plunge.
• So, a transliteration was made an English
  pronunciation of a Greek word.

• Baptist scholars put out a version, the American
  Bible Union of 1864, that translated baptizo
  correctly as immerse.
• However, they soon called in all copies for they
  had lost their own name!

• John was no longer the Baptist.
• He was John the Immerser!
• So that translation, accurate though it may be,
  has disappeared.

Baptism into Moses

• For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant,
  that our fathers were all under the cloud, and
  all passed through the sea and were all
  baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea
  (1 Corinthians 101-2)

• And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea
  and Jehovah caused the sea to go (back) by a
  strong east wind all the night, and made the sea
  dry land, and the waters were divided. (Exodus
  1421)

  a wall unto them on their right hand, and on

• This baptism was
• Separation from Egypt, freedom
• Uniting with Moses
• Burial, resurrection (cloud, sea)
• New life
• Salvation

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

• I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance
  but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
  whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall
  baptize you in the Holy Spirit and (in) fire
  (Matthew 311)

• And I knew him not but he that sent me to
  baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon
  whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending,
  and abiding upon him, the same is he that
  baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. (John 133)

Baptism of Fire

• I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance

Baptism of Suffering

• And he said unto them, What would ye that I
  should do for you?
• And they said unto him, Grant unto us that we may
  sit, one on thy right hand, and one on (thy) left
  hand, in thy glory.

  ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink?
  or to be baptized with the baptism that I am
  baptized with?

  withal shall ye be baptized

Johns Baptism

• Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea,
  and all the region round about the Jordan and
  they were baptized of him in the river Jordan,
  confessing their sins.

  (Mark 14)
• John came, who baptized in the wilderness and
  preached the baptism of repentance unto remission
  of sins.
• This is the same phrase as

Baptism for the Dead

• Else what shall they do that are baptized for the
  dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then
  are they baptized for them?
• (1 Corinthians 1529)
• Context is the resurrection.

• Paul is not saying it is correct to baptize
  persons for other dead persons.
• Baptism is valid only to those who hear, believe,
  repent, and confess their faith in Jesus as the
  Son of God.

• It is possible that Paul refers to this only to
  emphasize that persons will be raised from the
  dead.
• It is possible this was practiced by heathen
  religions.
• It is possible that misinformed Christians were
  practicing this.
