Bible Baptisms

Introduction
  • Baptism became a new word in the English Language
in 1611 at the translation of the King James
    Version.
  • The Church of England, Anglican, (Episcopalian in
the U. S.), practiced sprinkling and pouring.

4
  • Thus, when they came to the Greek word, baptizo
bapti/zw, they could not use the accurate
    definition.
  • Definition immerse, dip, plunge.
  • So, a transliteration was made an English
    pronunciation of a Greek word.

5
  • Baptist scholars put out a version, the American
Bible Union of 1864, that translated baptizo
    correctly as immerse.
  • However, they soon called in all copies for they
    had lost their own name!

6
  • John was no longer the Baptist.
  • He was John the Immerser!
  • So that translation, accurate though it may be,
    has disappeared.

7
Baptism into Moses
  • For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant,
that our fathers were all under the cloud, and
all passed through the sea and were all
baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea
    (1 Corinthians 101-2)

8
  • And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea
and Jehovah caused the sea to go (back) by a
strong east wind all the night, and made the sea
dry land, and the waters were divided. (Exodus
    1421)

9
  • And the children of Israel went into the midst of
the sea upon the dry ground and the waters were
a wall unto them on their right hand, and on
    their left. (Exodus 1422)

10
  • This baptism was
  • Separation from Egypt, freedom
  • Uniting with Moses
  • Burial, resurrection (cloud, sea)
  • New life
  • Salvation

11
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
  • I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance
but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall
baptize you in the Holy Spirit and (in) fire
    (Matthew 311)

12
  • And I knew him not but he that sent me to
baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon
whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending,
and abiding upon him, the same is he that
baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. (John 133)

13
  • But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit
is come upon you and ye shall be my witnesses
both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria,
and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
  • (Acts 18)

14
  • And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 24)

15
Baptism of Fire
  • I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance
but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall
baptize you in the Holy Spirit and (in) fire
    (Matthew 311)

16
  • whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly
cleanse his threshing-floor and he will gather
his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will
    burn up with unquenchable fire.
  • (Matthew 312)

17
  • And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it
off it is good for thee to enter into life
maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go
into hell, into the unquenchable fire.

18
  • (where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched.) And if thy foot cause thee to
stumble, cut it off it is good for thee to enter
into life halt, rather than having thy two feet
    to be cast into hell.

19
  • (where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
    quenched.)
  • And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it
out it is good for thee to enter into the
kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having
two eyes to be cast into hell

20
  • where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
    quenched.
  • For every one shall be salted with fire.
  • (Mark 943-49)

21
Baptism of Suffering
  • And he said unto them, What would ye that I
    should do for you?
  • And they said unto him, Grant unto us that we may
sit, one on thy right hand, and one on (thy) left
    hand, in thy glory.

22
  • But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye
ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink?
or to be baptized with the baptism that I am
    baptized with?

23
  • And they said unto him, We are able. And Jesus
said unto them, The cup that I drink ye shall
drink and with the baptism that I am baptized
    withal shall ye be baptized

24
  • but to sit on my right hand or on (my) left hand
is not mine to give but (it is for them) for
whom it hath been prepared. (Mark 1036-40)

25
Johns Baptism
  • Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea,
and all the region round about the Jordan and
they were baptized of him in the river Jordan,
    confessing their sins.
  • (Matthew 35-6)

26
  • and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us By what
authority doest thou these things? or who is he
    that gave thee this authority?

27
  • And he answered and said unto them, I also will
ask you a question and tell me
  • The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from
    men?
  • (Luke 202-4)

28
  • And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at
Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper
country came to Ephesus, and found certain
disciples and he said unto them, Did ye receive
the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they (said)
unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether
    the Holy Spirit was (given).

29
  • And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And
they said, Into John's baptism. And Paul said,
John baptized with the baptism of repentance,
saying unto the people that they should believe
on him that should come after him, that is, on
    Jesus.

30
  • And when they heard this, they were baptized into
the name of the Lord Jesus.
  • (Acts 191-5)

31
  • Looked forward to coming of Jesus.
  • Not in the name of the Trinity.
  • Not by authority of Jesus.
  • Only to lost sheep of Israel.
  • Used only prior to Pentecost.

32
  • Johns baptism was for the remission of sins
    (Mark 14)
  • John came, who baptized in the wilderness and
preached the baptism of repentance unto remission
    of sins.
  • This is the same phrase as

33
  • And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be
baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ unto the remission of your sins and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • (Acts 238)

34
Baptism of Jesus
  • And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be
baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ unto the remission of your sins and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • (Acts 238)

35
  • And he commanded the chariot to stand still and
they both went down into the water, both Philip
and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
  • (Acts 838)

36
  • And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be
baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his
    name.
  • (Acts 2216)

37
  • Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized
into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
We were buried therefore with him through baptism
    unto death

38
  • that like as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, so we also might
    walk in newness of life.
  • (Romans 63-4)

39
  • For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one
body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or
free and were all made to drink of one Spirit.
  • (1 Corinthians 1213)

40
  • For ye are all sons of God, through faith (the
    faith, RHL), in Christ Jesus.
  • For as many of you as were baptized into Christ
    did put on Christ.
  • (Galatians 326-27)

41
  • that aforetime were disobedient, when the
longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,
while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that
is, eight souls, were saved through water

42
  • which also after a true likeness doth now save
you, (even) baptism, not the putting away of the
filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a
good conscience toward God, through the
    resurrection of Jesus Christ
  • (1 Peter 320-21)

43
Baptism for the Dead
  • Else what shall they do that are baptized for the
dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then
    are they baptized for them?
  • (1 Corinthians 1529)
  • Context is the resurrection.

44
  • Paul is not saying it is correct to baptize
    persons for other dead persons.
  • Baptism is valid only to those who hear, believe,
repent, and confess their faith in Jesus as the
    Son of God.

45
  • It is possible that Paul refers to this only to
emphasize that persons will be raised from the
    dead.
  • It is possible this was practiced by heathen
    religions.
  • It is possible that misinformed Christians were
    practicing this.

46
Conclusion
  • Baptisms
  • Moses John
  • Holy Spirit Jesus
  • Fire Dead
  • Suffering

47
  • Only one baptism is valid today.
  • And Jesus came to them and spake unto them,
saying, All authority hath been given unto me in
heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore, and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
    Holy Spirit (Matthew 2818-19)

48
  • And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world,
and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He
that believeth and is baptized shall be saved
but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned
  • (Mark 1615-16)

49
  • (There is) one body, and one Spirit, even as also
ye were called in one hope of your calling one
Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father
of all, who is over all, and through all, and in
    all.
  • (Ephesians 44-6)
