Background
  • The project was initiated after recent
exploration in the Møre and Vøring Basin
indicated a serious problem in the prediction of
the presence of reservoir sands related to
    deep-marine depositional systems.
  • The aim of the project is to study sedimentary
rocks from the Norwegian Sea with respect to the
    primary composition, diagenesis and log
composition, with focus on the Cretaceous
    sequence.
  • Mineralogical and geochemical analysis will be
completed to establish relationships between clay
mineralogy, carbonate and quartz cement and
seismic velocities and attributes. This will
provide a better understanding of the physical
properties of the sedimentary rocks giving rise
    to the seismic features observed.

4
Main Points of Interest
  • Clay Diagenesis as a function of temperature.
  • Influence of volcanic sediments in terms of
    diagenesis and seismic response.
  • Carbonate and biogenic silica content and their
influence on log and seismic response.
  • Grain size and clay mineral content (i.e. illite
/kaolinite ratio) of shale facies may give
indication of the distance to the clastic source
and provide some indications of source area and
the prediction of turbidite sand deposits.

5
Methods
  • XRD
  • Extensive/detailed XRD analysis
  • Over 500 samples
  • Bulk clay mineralogy and detailed analysis of
    clay fraction
  • XRF
  • Major and trace element analysis
  • SEM
  • Element mapping, carbonate/biogenic input,
    micro-crystalline silica presence
  • Biostratigraphy
  • Micropaleontology and Palynology

6
Objectives
  • Produce an extensive dataset consisting of
    detailed mineralogical analyses and physical
measurements of regularly spaced silt and clay
samples from the Upper Cretaceous. This product
may be used as input to each companies in-house
    calibration process (integration with electric
    log interpretation, log acoustic properties,
    etc.), hopefully enhancing seismic attribute
    analysis.
  • Produce a stratigraphical and mineralogical model
to help explain the distribution of sands and
    shales within deepwater depositional environment,
which helps to explain observed and/or modelled
features seen in the seismic data.
  • Integrate results with parallel petrophysics,
    geophysics and basin modelling projects
