Title: Programme Led Apprenticeships

1
Programme Led Apprenticeships
  • Their value to Apprentices, Employers and Colleges

2
The development of Programme Led Apprenticeships
  • Programme Led Apprenticeships started in
    September 2004.
  • They were developed to find a new way of
combining academic and vocational education into
a package of learning that meets employers and
    learners needs alike.
  • They are at the forefront of a drive for Sixth
Form Colleges in particular to develop their
provision in the field of work based learning

3
What is involved in a Programme Led Apprenticeship
  • A Programme Led Apprenticeship will vary in its
    design from college to college.
  • All programmes will involve a mix of
  • College based study mixed with work experience
(Programme Led Element) This lasts no more than
    one academic year
  • Full time employment (Employer Led Element)
  • Embedded Skills tuition to address the basic
skills or additional support needs of learners

4
Model of Programme Led Apprenticeship Delivery
  • Programme Led Apprenticeships are delivered based
on a model of front loading college delivery
    ahead of employment.
  • One Model
  • College based study for four days per week
September to May, combined with 1 day in the
    workplace, followed by
  • Full time in the workplace June and July (option
    to extend)

5
Whats the value of Programme Led Apprenticeships
to Apprentices
  • Apprentices have an opportunity to
  • Combine academic and vocational study
  • Develop a relationship with an employer over a
period of time to really understand the needs of
an employer in a specific sector
  • Strengthen their skills base through access to
    high quality support mechanisms
  • Undertake real work experience

6
Whats the value of Programme Led Apprenticeships
to employers
  • The length of the employer led element of an
Apprentices programme allows the employer to
fully integrate Apprentices as new team
    members.
  • Many employers find their access to Apprentices a
highly effective element of their recruitment
    strategies.
  • Engagement in initiatives such as a Programme Led
Apprenticeship helps employers to nurture local
talent and foster economic development and future
    prosperity.
  • Experience of an employer within the programme
can provide the first steps in the employers
    development of work based training.

7
Whats the value of Programme Led Apprenticeships
to colleges?
  • These programme enable colleges to
  • Respond to the needs of students by combining
    academic and vocational education
  • Address the skills needs of students that may
    provide a barrier to employability
  • Ensure that college based study is meeting the
needs of employers within individual sectors

8
Health and Social Care Impacts
  • Level 3 Health and Social Care Apprentices
  • Choice of progression routes
  • Option 1 25 (3/12) students from 05-06 cohort
  • Completing the Apprenticeship in 1 Year and
applying directly for the INAM Diploma with aid
of a subsistence bursary (BHASVIC has direct
links with the University of Brighton, who have
    applauded our provision)
  • In the third year of the Diploma, half of the
units of study can be at undergraduate level. In
the following year or subsequent years, they are
entitled to secondment from work to complete
their degree while being paid as a full time
    nurse.
  • First fully qualified nurse from the 2000-2001
cohort of BHASVIC learners on this programme

9
Health and Social Care Impacts
  • Option 2 (Also available for Level 2 Learners)
  • 60 7/12
  • Applying for work as a Care Assistant with BSUH
NHS Trust for a year or two and then applying for
the INAM Diploma (this route allows students to
gain more hands on experience and even more
    importantly to mature emotionally and
    professionally). During this period, students
will study for Level 3 NVQ in Care

10
Feedback for University of Brighton
  • Feedback from Admissions Manager at University of
    Brighton
  • A key problem is retaining Diploma students
following their first placements on wards this
is the strength of our course because
  • Students rotate through five different work
placements between September and May, spending
    approximately six weeks in each.
  • Students complete 8 weeks full time on a
placement of their choice to complete their full
NVQ Level 2 in June and July

11
Feedback for University of Brighton Contd.
  • Another key problem for Diploma students is the
level of literacy and numeracy they enter with.
  • The students on our Apprenticeship programme
study for key skills qualifications in
Application of Number and Communications and have
a significant advantage from the outset.
(Interviews for potential Diploma students will
be incorporating tests in literacy and numeracy)
  • Academic rigour behind the core programme of
study (OCR National equivalent to one A level
in one year for Level 3 students and four GCSEs
for Level 2 students) alongside the Technical
    Certificate was also highly valued

12
And finally
  • The Programme Led Apprenticeship programmes
enable a college and its partners to meet the
needs and aspirations of young people and the
workforce requirements of employers in a new
approach to vocational education. I am convinced
it gives us a model for the future which will
strengthen our partnerships, will be valued by
employers and which, above all, will give our
young people an excellent start in their
    careers.
