Title: Calvinism vs. Arminianism

1
Calvinism vs. Arminianism
  • Two seemingly conflicting views of salvation.
  • Both are correct and proven through scripture.
  • Calvinism represents salvation of the spirit.
  • Arminianism represents salvation of the soul.

2
Man, Created in the Image of God
Spirit Soul Body

3
The Five Points of Calvinism
  • 1. Total Depravity.
  • 2. Unconditional Election.
  • 3. Limited Atonement
  • 4. Irresistible Grace
  • 5. Perseverance of the Saints.
  • Applies to the salvation of mans spirit.

4
The Five Points of Arminianism
  • 1. Free Will.
  • 2. Conditional Election.
  • 3. Universal Atonement.
  • 4. Obstructable Grace.
  • 5. Falling From Grace.
  • Applies to the salvation of mans soul.

5
1st Point of Calvin Arminius
Calvinism Arminianism
I. Total Depravity.. As a result of the fall, mans depravity is complete and total. He does not have the free will to choose God because he is dead (spiritually), blind, deaf and unteachable in the things of God I. Free Will. After man is spiritually regenerated by the Holy Spirit, his will is released from bondage. He is now able to repent of his sins of his own free will and follow Christ. Repentance is a work of man and always occurs after spiritual regeneration or spiritual rebirth. The Holy Spirit regenerates man spiritually and immediately commands him to Repent and be Baptized.
6
2nd Point of Calvin Arminius
Calvinism Arminianism
II. Unconditional Election. Election is entirely dependent upon the free will of God and his purpose for those he chose to spiritually regenerate. Gods work of regeneration must precede faith and repentance. Faith is automatic as the response to spiritual regeneration, but repentance is a work of man based upon his free will choice. Regeneration and faith result in spirit salvation, which is the covenant of grace. Repentance and baptism result in soul salvation, which is the covenant of works. II. Conditional Election. The salvation of the soul, which pertains to rewards only, is conditional upon mans repentance and baptism. The believer in Christ must choose to repent of his sins, die to self (i.e., lose his soul) and be obedient to Christ and his Word. Soul salvation is dependent upon the free will choice of the believer to follow Christ as a disciple
7
3rd Point of Calvin Arminius
Calvinism Arminianism
III. Limited Atonement. Atonement is for the elect of God only. Christ died only for those whom the Father gave him. Jesus work was a perfect work. III. Universal Atonement. Soul salvation is universal in that it applies to all the elect, but since soul salvation is conditional, it can be lost at the Judgment Seal of Christ. Spirit salvation is also universal for all Christians and is unconditional in that it cannot be lost by the actions or behavior of the Christian.
8
4th Point of Calvin Arminius
Calvinism Arminianism
IV. Irresistible Grace. Since God has unconditionally elected those whom He has chosen for Christ, all those who are born again spiritually will find Christ irresistible. They will believe in Christ and receive him as their propitiation because God the Holy Spirit has given them the faith to believe this. IV. Obstructable Grace. Spirit salvation causes a believer to be irresistibly drawn to Christ. After Spirit salvation, all Christians are commanded to repent and be baptized in order to realize soul salvation. The regenerated believer cannot resist the work of the Holy Spirit on his new spirit nature, but he can obstruct or resist the divine influence upon the heart of the regenerated believer. The heart is part of the soul and refers to the inward being or self. A person can have a regenerated spirit, and still not have the mind or heart of a faithful believer.
9
5th Point of Calvin Arminius
Calvinism Arminianism
V. Perseverance of the Saints. Since spirit salvation is dependent upon the election of God and in no way dependent upon mans faithfulness, the Christian will certainly persevere in spirit salvation. Since the Christian did nothing to earn his salvation, he can also do nothing to lose it. V. Falling from Grace. A Christian who has decided to follow Christ can fall away from the faith and end up losing his soul. His life becomes wasted and he loses his position of reigning and ruling with Christ in his coming kingdom. He is still saved spiritually and he still goes to heaven.
10
Comments on Both
The above five points of Calvinism apply to the spirit of man The above five points of Arminianism apply to the soul of man.
Grace, Faith and the Regenerated Spirit that was dead in sin are a free gift of God. This is a works salvation, separate from Gods free gift. It requires man to save his soul or lose it.
As man goes through life after having his spirit quickened, it is safe to say that my spirit has been saved forever. As man goes through life after having his spirit quickened, he must work to save his soul. So as we walk through life we should constantly be working to save our soul. Christ will try it by fire and clean it up at the Judgment Seat of Christ.
11
Proof Scriptures for Calvinism Arminianism
  • A conflict in the method that a human is saved.
Is it through God or a free choice of Man?
  • Lets look at both, first the Calvinist view and
    then the Arminian view.

12
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • I. Total Depravity - As a result of the fall,
mans depravity is complete and total. He does
not have the free will to choose God because he
is dead, blind, deaf and unteachable in the
    things of God.

13
Total Depravity
  • (Rom 512 KJV) Wherefore, as by one man sin
entered into the world, and death by sin and so
death passed upon all men, for that all have
    sinned
  • (1 Cor 214 KJV) But the natural man receiveth
not the things of the Spirit of God for they are
foolishness unto him neither can he know them,
    because they are spiritually discerned.

14
Total Depravity
  • (Eph 22 KJV) Wherein in time past ye walked
according to the course of this world, according
to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit
that now worketh in the children of disobedience
  • (Eph 23 KJV) Among whom also we all had our
conversation in times past in the lusts of our
flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of
the mind and were by nature the children of
    wrath, even as others.

15
Total Depravity
  • (John 1516 KJV) Ye have not chosen me, but I
have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should
go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit
should remain that whatsoever ye shall ask of
the Father in my name, he may give it you.

16
Total Depravity
  • (John 112 KJV) But as many as received him, to
them gave he power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on his name
  • (John 113 KJV) Which were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of
    man, but of God.

17
Total Depravity
  • (Rom 914 KJV) What shall we say then? Is there
    unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
  • (Rom 915 KJV) For he saith to Moses, I will
have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will
have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
  • (Rom 916 KJV) So then it is not of him that
willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that
    showeth mercy.

18
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • II. Unconditional ElectionElection is entirely
dependent upon the free will of God and his
purpose for those he chose to spiritually
regenerate. Gods work of regeneration must
precede faith and repentance. Faith is automatic
as the response to spiritual regeneration, but
repentance is a work of man based upon his free
will choice. Regeneration and faith result in
spirit salvation, which is the covenant of grace.
Repentance and baptism result in soul salvation,
which is the covenant of works

19
Unconditional Election
  • (Acts 239 KJV) For the promise is unto you, and
to your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
  • (Eph 11 KJV) Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ
by the will of God, to the saints which are at
Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus
  • (Eph 12 KJV) Grace be to you, and peace, from
God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

20
Unconditional Election
  • (Eph 13 KJV) Blessed be the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with
all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in
    Christ
  • (Eph 14 KJV) According as he hath chosen us in
him before the foundation of the world, that we
should be holy and without blame before him in
    love
  • (Eph 15 KJV) Having predestinated us unto the
adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
according to the good pleasure of his will,

21
Unconditional Election
  • (Eph 16 KJV) To the praise of the glory of his
grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the
    beloved.
  • (Eph 17 KJV) In whom we have redemption through
his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to
    the riches of his grace
  • (Eph 18 KJV) Wherein he hath abounded toward us
    in all wisdom and prudence

22
Unconditional Election
  • (Eph 19 KJV) Having made known unto us the
mystery of his will, according to his good
pleasure which he hath purposed in himself
  • (Eph 110 KJV) That in the dispensation of the
fulness of times he might gather together in one
all things in Christ, both which are in heaven,
and which are on earth even in him

23
Unconditional Election
  • (Eph 111 KJV) In whom also we have obtained an
inheritance, being predestinated according to the
purpose of him who worketh all things after the
    counsel of his own will
  • (Eph 112 KJV) That we should be to the praise
of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

24
Unconditional Election
  • Two things should be very clear in the above
    passage of Scripture.
  • The first is that God chose us for salvation
before the foundation of the world.
  • The second is that He chose us according to the
good pleasure of His willnot ours.

25
Unconditional Election
  • It is stated three times in this brief passage
that God chose us on account of His will and good
    pleasure and not ours.
  • In addition, the following verses expressly state
that we are not saved by our own will or choice
but by the choice and will of God

26
Unconditional Election
  • (John 1516 KJV) Ye have not chosen me, but I
have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should
go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit
should remain that whatsoever ye shall ask of
the Father in my name, he may give it you.
  • (Rom 911 KJV) (For the children being not yet
born, neither having done any good or evil, that
the purpose of God according to election might
stand, not of works, but of him that calleth)

27
Unconditional Election
  • (John 113 KJV) Which were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of
    man, but of God.
  • (John 644 KJV) No man can come to me, except
the Father which hath sent me draw him and I
will raise him up at the last day.

28
Unconditional Election
  • John 644 is a proof scripture for Unconditional
    Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace
    Perseverance of the Saints.
  • See explanation of this verse under II.
    Conditional Election below.

29
Unconditional Election
  • (Rom 828 KJV) And we know that all things work
together for good to them that love God, to them
who are the called according to his purpose.
  • (Rom 829 KJV) For whom he did foreknow, he also
did predestinate to be conformed to the image of
his Son, that he might be the firstborn among
    many brethren.

30
Unconditional Election
  • (Rom 911 KJV) (For the children being not yet
born, neither having done any good or evil, that
the purpose of God according to election might
stand, not of works, but of him that calleth)

31
Unconditional Election
  • (1 Cor 126 KJV) For ye see your calling,
brethren, how that not many wise men after the
flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are
    called
  • (1 Cor 127 KJV) But God hath chosen the foolish
things of the world to confound the wise and God
hath chosen the weak things of the world to
confound the things which are mighty

32
Unconditional Election
  • (1 Cor 128 KJV) And base things of the world,
and things which are despised, hath God chosen,
yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought
    things that are
  • (1 Cor 129 KJV) That no flesh should glory in
    his presence.

33
Unconditional Election
  • (2 Tim 19 KJV) Who hath saved us, and called us
with an holy calling, not according to our works,
but according to his own purpose and grace, which
was given us in Christ Jesus before the world
    began,
  • (John 521 KJV) For as the Father raiseth up the
dead, and quickeneth them even so the Son
    quickeneth whom he will.

34
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • III. Limited AtonementAtonement is for the elect
of God only. Christ died only for those whom the
    Father gave him.

35
Limited Atonement
  • (John 637 KJV) All that the Father giveth me
shall come to me and him that cometh to me I
will in no wise cast out.
  • This verse is a scripture text for Unconditional
    Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace
    Perseverance of the Saints.

36
Limited Atonement
  • (John 644 KJV) No man can come to me, except
the Father which hath sent me draw him and I
will raise him up at the last day.
  • This verse is a proof scripture for Unconditional
Election, Limited Atonement and Perseverance of
    the Saints.

37
Limited Atonement
  • (John 665 KJV) And he said, Therefore said I
unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it
were given unto him of my Father.
  • (1 John 410 KJV) Herein is love, not that we
loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son
to be the propitiation for our sins.

38
Limited Atonement
  • (John 113 KJV) Which were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of
    man, but of God.
  • See explanation of this verse under II.
    Conditional Election below.

39
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • IV. Irresistible GraceSince God has
unconditionally elected those whom He has chosen
for Christ, all those who are born again
spiritually will find Christ irresistible. They
will believe in Christ and receive him as their
propitiation because God the Holy Spirit has
given them the faith to believe this.

40
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • IV. Irresistible Grace - They are irresistibly
drawn to Christ for spirit salvationeven though
they may resist the call to repentance and
baptism. Even though spirit salvation is
irresistible, soul salvation is obstructable by
the free will choices of the believer. All
believers are children (i.e., teknon) of God, but
not all believers become the mature sons (i.e.,
    huios) of God.

41
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • IV. Irresistible Grace - Spirit salvation is
irresistible. Spirit salvation is by faith in
Christ. Soul salvation is by faithfulness to
Christ. Faith in Christ is irresistible.
    Faithfulness to Christ is obstructable.

42
Irresistible Grace
  • (John 637 KJV) All that the Father giveth me
shall come to me and him that cometh to me I
will in no wise cast out.
  • This verse is a proof scripture for Limited
    Atonement, Irresistible Grace Perseverance of
    the Saints.

43
Irresistible Grace
  • (John 644 KJV) No man can come to me, except
the Father which hath sent me draw him and I
will raise him up at the last day.
  • This verse is a proof scripture for Unconditional
    Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace
    Perseverance of the Saints.

44
The Five Points of Calvinism as Applied to the
Spirit of Man
  • V..Perseverance of the SaintsSince spirit
salvation is dependent upon the election of God
and in no way dependent upon mans faithfulness,
the Christian will certainly persevere in spirit
salvation. Since the Christian did nothing to
earn his salvation, he can also do nothing to
    lose it.

45
Perseverance of the Saints
  • (John 637 KJV) All that the Father giveth me
shall come to me and him that cometh to me I
will in no wise cast out.
  • This verse is a proof scripture for Limited
    Atonement, Irresistible Grace Perseverance of
    the Saints.

46
Perseverance of the Saints
  • (1 Cor 315 KJV) If any man's work shall be
burned, he shall suffer loss but he himself
shall be saved yet so as by fire.
  • This verse establishes that even though all of a
Christians works can be burned up, he will still
be unconditionally saved. Good works are not a
criterion for spirit salvation. All Christians
will persevere in spirit salvationeven with NO
GOOD WORKS at the Judgment Seat of Christ.

47
Perseverance of the Saints
  • (2 Tim 210 KJV) Therefore I endure all things
for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain
the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with
    eternal glory.
  • (2 Tim 211 KJV) It is a faithful saying For if
we be dead with him, we shall also live with him
  • (2 Tim 212 KJV) If we suffer, we shall also
reign with him if we deny him, he also will deny
    us
  • (2 Tim 213 KJV) If we believe not, yet he
abideth faithful he cannot deny himself.

48
Perseverance of the Saints
  • The salvation which is in Christ Jesus with
eternal glory is soul salvation and depends upon
our faithfulness (i.e., not denying him and
believing his Word). If we do this, we must die
to self and suffer in order to reign with him. If
we do not do these things, then we will still be
saved spiritually because He is faithful and
    cannot deny himself.

49
Perseverance of the Saints
  • This is the perseverance of the saints in spirit
salvation because of the faithfulness of Jesus,
and not our faithfulness. The Christian who is
saved spiritually once will remain savedeven if
he denies Jesus and does not remain faithful.
There will be severe consequences at the Judgment
Seat of Christ with the loss of soul salvation,
the inheritance and eternal glory with Jesus
    Christ in his kingdom.

50
Perseverance of the Saints
  • (Rom 838 KJV) For I am persuaded, that neither
death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities,
nor powers, nor things present, nor things to
    come,
  • (Rom 839 KJV) Nor height, nor depth, nor any
other creature, shall be able to separate us from
the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our
    Lord.
  • We will now look at the Five Points of
Arminianism, which are true when applied to soul
    salvation.

51
The Five Points of Arminianism as Applied to the
Soul of Man
  • I. Free WillAfter man is spiritually regenerated
by the Holy Spirit, his will is released from
bondage. He is now able to repent of his sins of
his own free will and follow Christ. Repentance
is a work of man and always occurs after
spiritual regeneration or spiritual rebirth. The
Holy Spirit regenerates man spiritually and
immediately commands him to Repent and be
    baptized.

52
Free Will
  • (Acts 236 KJV) Therefore let all the house of
Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that
same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and
    Christ.
  • (Acts 237 KJV) Now when they heard this, they
were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter
and to the rest of the apostles, Men and
    brethren, what shall we do?

53
Free Will
  • Note that when they heard they were pricked in
their heart. They believed that Jesus was the
Christ and this faith came from the Holy Spirit.
They were spiritually regenerated. Their will was
released from bondage, and they now have the
ability to repent and do good works, and they
    ask what shall we do?

54
Free Will
  • (Acts 238 KJV) Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the
name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • Peter tells them to repent and be baptized. This
is an act of their own free will, but note that
the very next verse states that this promise of
repentance is to them and their children and
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
This is Point Number 2 under CalvinismUncondition
al Election. It is also Point Number 3Limited
    Atonement.

55
Free Will
  • (Acts 239 KJV) For the promise is unto you, and
to your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
  • (Deu 3019 KJV) I call heaven and earth to
record this day against you, that I have set
before you life and death, blessing and cursing
therefore choose life, that both thou and thy
    seed may live

56
Free Will
  • This is just one verse of many where the Lord
asks his elect people, the Jews, to make a free
will decision to follow him and realize life
instead of death. They will receive either life
or death, blessing or cursing based upon their
free will choice. Following is another verse
showing the freedom of choice of Gods elect
    people to serve him

57
Free Will
  • (Josh 2415 KJV) And if it seem evil unto you to
serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will
serve whether the gods which your fathers served
that were on the other side of the flood, or the
gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell but
as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

58
The Five Points of Arminianism as Applied to the
Soul of Man
  • II. Conditional ElectionThe salvation of the
soul, which pertains to rewards only, is
conditional upon mans repentance and baptism.
The believer in Christ must choose to repent of
his sins, die to self (i.e., lose his soul) and
be obedient to Christ and his Word. Soul
salvation is dependent upon the free will choice
of the believer to follow Christ as a disciple.

59
Conditional Election
  • (John 112 KJV) But as many as received him, to
them gave he power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on his name
  • (John 113 KJV) Which were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of
    man, but of God.

60
Conditional Election
  • Note in verse 12 that believers who receive
Christ have the power to become sons of God.
These are the mature sons (i.e., huios) who not
only receive (i.e., believe) Christ, but they
believe on his name. This means that they
    entrust their spiritual well-being (i.e.,
believe) unto the power and authority (i.e.,
name) of Jesus Christ. Please note that verse 13
limits those who receive Christ to those Which
were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

61
Conditional Election
  • Thus, verse 12 is a proof text for conditional
election, but verse 13 is a proof text for
    Calvinism Point 2Unconditional Election and
Calvinism Point 3Limited Atonement. The Greek
word for receive means to appropriate for ones
self or to receive that which is offered. The
Christian who receives Christ in verse 12 becomes
a child (i.e., teknon) of God, and he now has the
power to become a son (i.e., huios) of God, but
he must choose to entrust his spiritual
well-being unto Christ (i.e., believe on his
    name).

62
The Five Points of Arminianism as Applied to the
Soul of Man
  • III. Universal AtonementSoul salvation is
universal in that it applies to all the elect,
but since soul salvation is conditional, it can
be lost at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Spirit
salvation is also universal for all Christians
and is unconditional in that it cannot be lost by
the actions or behavior of the Christian.

63
Universal Atonement
  • (John 316 KJV) For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have
    everlasting life.

64
Universal Atonement
  • As explained earlier, the world is the kosmos
and refers to the Church of God. The kosmos as
the elect of God is defined as whosoever
believeth in him. The members of the Church
should not perish but they might. The perishing
pertains to the soul or the life and not the
spirit. The Christian who does not perish at the
Judgment Seat of Christ will realize everlasting
    or eternal life.

65
Universal Atonement
  • (2 Pet 39 KJV) The Lord is not slack concerning
his promise, as some men count slackness but is
longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any
should perish, but that all should come to
    repentance.

66
Universal Atonement
  • The Lord is longsuffering to all Christians, and
desires that none perish at the Judgment Seat of
Christ. Please note that repentance is the
condition for not perishing. Repentance is a work
dependent upon the free will decision of the
spiritually regenerated person. Even though God
desires that all Christians come to repentance,
there will be those who either do not come to
repentance in this life, or they fall away from
grace before death or rapture. Consequently, they
will perish at the Judgment Seat of Christ. They
will still be saved spiritually, and they will
come to repentance at the Judgment Seat of
    Christ.

Universal Atonement
  • (John 129 KJV) The next day John seeth Jesus
coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of
God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

68
Universal Atonement
  • This verse states that Jesus taketh away the sin
of the world. The world is the kosmos and again
refers to believers. Jesus takes away the sin of
all the elect, whether they become faithful in
this life or not. Spirit salvation is universal
for all believers and cannot be lost, while soul
salvation is possible for all believers, but it
can be frustrated or obstructed by the decisions,
actions and behavior of the believer.

69
Universal Atonement
  • (John 112 KJV) But as many as received him, to
them gave he power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on his name
  • All Christians who receive Christ are given the
power to become mature sons (i.e., huios) of God.
These are the ones who entrust their spiritual
well-being (i.e., believe) to the power and
authority (i.e., name) of Jesus Christ. To
believe on the name of Jesus Christ means to
entrust ones spiritual well-being to the power
and authority of Jesus Christ. It means to die to
self and allow Christ to live his life in the
    believer.

The Five Points of Arminianism as Applied to the
Soul of Man
  • IV. Obstructable GraceSpirit salvation causes a
believer to be irresistibly drawn to Christ.
After Spirit salvation, all Christians are
commanded to repent and be baptized in order to
realize soul salvation. The regenerated believer
cannot resist the work of the Holy Spirit on his
new spirit nature, but he can obstruct or resist
the divine influence upon the heart of the
regenerated believer. The heart is part of the
soul and refers to the inward being or self. A
person can have a regenerated spirit, and still
not have the mind or heart of a faithful
    believer.

71
The Five Points of Arminianism as Applied to the
Soul of Man
  • IV. Obstructable Grace The mind or heart of the
believer must be transformed by the free will
decision of the believer to be a follower of
Christ. Since it is a free will decision by the
regenerated believer, it CAN BE OBSTRUCTED by the
believer. The result is the loss of soul
salvation and the loss of reward. Thus, the
believer can obstruct the grace that pertains to
the divine influence upon the heart. The grace
that comes from the unmerited favor of God in
regenerating the persons spirit is irresistible
and cannot be frustrated or obstructed. Simply
stated, grace upon the spirit is irresistible,
but grace upon the soul is obstructable.

72
Obstructable Grace
  • (John 336 NASB) "He who believes (i.e.,
entrusts his spiritual well-being) in the Son has
eternal life but he who does not obey the Son
shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides
    on him."
  • This verse is talking about soul salvation and
eternal life, which is a reward for faithfulness.

73
Obstructable Grace
  • (John 314 NASB) "And as Moses lifted up the
serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son
    of Man be lifted up
  • (John 315 NASB) that whoever believes may in
    Him have eternal life.
  • (John 316 NASB) "For God so loved the world
(kosmos), that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish,
    but have eternal life.

74
Obstructable Grace
  • (John 317 NASB) "For God did not send the Son
into the world (kosmos) to judge the world, but
that the world (kosmos) should be saved through
    Him.
  • (John 318 NASB) "He who believes in Him is not
judged he who does not believe has been judged
already, because he has not believed in the name
of the only begotten Son of God.

75
Obstructable Grace
  • (John 319 NASB) "And this is the judgment, that
the light is come into the world (kosmos), and
men loved the darkness rather than the light for
    their deeds were evil.
  • (John 320 NASB) "For everyone who does evil
hates the light, and does not come to the light,
lest his deeds should be exposed.

76
Obstructable Grace
  • (John 321 NASB) "But he who practices the truth
comes to the light, that his deeds may be
manifested as having been wrought in God.
  • This whole passage of Scripture is talking about
the Church (i.e., kosmos) and soul salvation
(i.e., eternal life). God did not send his Son
into the Church to condemn and censure it, but
that all in the Church may realize soul salvation
(i.e., eternal life). Christians are saved
spiritually by faith in the death of Christ on
    the cross.

77
Obstructable Grace
  • Their souls are saved and they realize eternal
life by entrusting their spiritual well-being
unto the power and authority (i.e., name of the
only begotten Son of God) of Jesus Christ. Their
spirits are saved by the death of Christ. Their
souls are saved by the life of Christ. Many
Christians prefer to walk in darkness instead of
the light, because of their evil deeds (vs. 20).

78
The Five Points of Arminianism as Applied to the
Soul of Man
  • V. Falling from GraceA Christian who has decided
to follow Christ can fall away from the faith and
end up losing his soul. His life becomes wasted
and he loses his position of reigning and ruling
with Christ in his coming kingdom. He is still
saved spiritually and he still goes to heaven.

79
Falling from Grace
  • (Heb 64 KJV) For it is impossible for those who
were once enlightened, and have tasted of the
heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the
    Holy Ghost,
  • (Heb 65 KJV) And have tasted the good word of
God, and the powers of the world to come,

80
Falling from Grace
  • (Heb 66 KJV) If they shall fall away, to renew
them again unto repentance seeing they crucify
to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him
    to an open shame.
  • Please note in the above passage that this
Christian cannot be renewed again unto
repentance. It is the soul that is lost and not
    the spirit.

81
Falling from Grace
  • (James 519 KJV) Brethren, if any of you do err
from the truth, and one convert him
  • (James 520 KJV) Let him know, that he which
converteth the sinner from the error of his way
shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a
    multitude of sins.
  • Please note that it is the soul of the Christian
brother that will die or perish if he falls away
from the truth. He will still be saved
spiritually, and he will still go to heaven.

82
The Point
  • Arminianism Calvinism are seemingly conflicting
points of view that are both true. They just
apply to different parts of man.
  • In short, the arguments are actually nullified by
the correct understanding of the Bible.
  • This is just one of many items that seem to be in
conflict but are in fact in harmony.
