Title: SuperMolecule XXXIX

1
SuperMolecule XXXIX
2
In the Playoffs
  • Well known for their success in lighting up the
    conductivity tester
  • Ionic Compound-ers
  • Introduced to us by sucrose, sweet but unable to
    light the conductivity tester
  • Molecular Compound-ers

3
Are You Ready?
  • Take out your composition books!
  • Take out your pens and pencils!
  • Its the SuperMolecule XXXIX Experience!

4
Warm up Give the stats for the Ionic Compound
Team
  • Team captains
  • Class of elements in the formula
  • Positive and negative ions
  • Write the formula for each player.
  • sodium chloride
  • copper (II) sulfate
  • Metal and nonmetal
  • Na and Cl-
  • Cu2 and SO42-
  • NaCl and CuSO4

5
and the stats for the Molecular Team
  • Team captains
  • Class of elements in the formula
  • Number of each atom in the formulas
  • Write the formula for each captain.
  • carbon dioxide
  • sulfur trioxide
  • Only nonmetals
  • 1 carbon two oxygens
  • 1 sulfur three oxygens
  • CO2 and SO3

6
Tips for the Fans
  • Heres how you can tell whether a team member
from the ionic compound or molecular compound is
    being described.
  • Ionic names use Roman numerals to count charge of
    the ion.
  • Ionic names use suffixes, ide, ite, ate to
    describe the ion.
  • Molecule names use Greek prefixes as counters of
the number of atoms in the formula.

7
Todays Lesson is sponsored by the makers of
Molecular Compounds
  • Standard Name and write formulas for compounds
  • Rubric What is good enough?
  • Formulas contain correct number of nonmetal atoms
  • Names use appropriate Greek prefixes to count
    atoms
  • Ion formula names do not use Greek prefixes

8
Rules for Binary (two element) Molecular Compounds
  • First word
  • If only one atom, name element
  • If more than one atom, use prefix element name
  • Second word
  • Use a prefix to count the atoms
  • Combine the first and second words.
  • Examples
  • CS2 carbon
  • N2O3 dinitrogen
  • CS2 disulfide
  • N2O3 trioxide
  • CS2 carbon disulfide
  • N2O3 dinitrogen trioxide

9
Greek Counting Prefixes
  • 1
  • 2
  • 3
  • 4
  • 5
  • 6
  • mono
  • di
  • tri
  • tetra
  • penta
  • hexa

10
Practice NamingName the following compounds.If
the compounds are ionic, do not name them.Write
an X.
  • CO
  • CO2
  • Na2CO3
  • AsCl3
  • N2O5

11
Now run the reverse play!Write the formula from
the name.
  • Nitrogen monoxide
  • Beryllium dichloride
  • Diphosphorus trioxide
  • Dihydrogen oxide
  • Hydrogen chloride

12
Compounds with H and a nonmetal do not follow the
Greek rule!
  • Compounds with hydrogen
  • No prefixes
  • And then theres dihydrogen monoxide also called
    dihydrogen oxide
  • H2S hydrogen sulfide
  • H2O water
  • H2O2 hydrogen peroxide
  • NH3 ammonia

13
  • Concluding Assignment
  • Write a 30 second ad in which you announce the
names of a player on the Molecular Compound Team.
  • Specify the following
  • The name of the player.
  • The formula of the player.
  • How the players name can be distinguished from
one on the Ionic Compound Team.
  • Make your announcement today!

14
Practice Session
  • Complete the worksheet for molecular compounds
  • Study pages 211-213 in Modern Chemistry.
