- The median is the middle score in a set of data.

below when data is ordered. - Mode
- The mode is the most frequently occurring value

7Strategies to Choose the Appropriate Measure of
Central Tendency
- Order the data first to make it easier to find
the median and mode. - Look for outliers (numbers that are a lot higher
or lower than the rest of the set an extreme
value) they affect the mean the most! - Is the data numerical or categorical (words)?
- Start with the easiest mode, then median, then
mean. You may find you dont need to work out
all of them.
8Using Measures of Central Tendency and Range to
find Missing Data
- Identify which measure of central tendency you
are given or if the range is given. - Mode Check to see if the mode of the data in
the table and the mode given are the same. - Median Put the median given in the middle and
order the data around it. - Range Are you missing the highest or the lowest
piece of data? - Mean work backwards.
