Lighting in Cinema
  • Lighting is the most important part of mis en
    scene.

Lighting is extremely important because it shows
what the director wants the audience to see, as
well as effecting the mood, tone, and feeling of
a scene.
The primary method of lighting in movies is Three
Point Lighting.

Key and Fill Light
Three Point Lighting
Back Light
Key light- this is the most important light in
making the movie. It is the strongest source of
light. Because it is such a strong light, it
makes the image visible, but creates many
shadows.
Fill Light- This light is weaker than the key
light. It is designed to come in at a different
angle and to remove any shadows created by the
key light.
Back Light- In many settings the actors may
fade into the background because of their
clothes, or the scenery. A backlight is a very
low power light that is placed behind the actor,
and is designed to create separation from the
background.
Notice how when you combine the key light and the
fill light, the shadows on the face, next to the
nose an under the neck disappear. This is the
effect of using key and fill light.
Three point lighting uses all three lighting
sources to create a image that is well lit with
few shadows. By being back lit also causes the
character to stand out from the background.
In this animation, notice how the different type
of light changes how the shadows appear on the
image. Notice how strong, or weak the light is,
and what it is doing in the background as well.
Shadows
Notice how the shadows have been removed by the
fill light. But there is a problem. Notice how
the actor seems to blend into the background.

See it again, from another angle
In this animation from another angle, notice the
strength of the light, and the shadows it
creates. One thing to keep in mind is the
location of the camera. In most movies the
camera is positioned between the key light on one
side, and the fill light on the other side.

Natural Light
  • When shooting a scene outside, the sun is used as
    the key light source.

Even when shooting outside, fill light and back
light are often used.
This image is a perfect example. The light from
the sun is coming down from above them, yet there
are no shadows on their faces, or necks.
Fill light and back lights were used to remove
shadows, and to make them stand out from the
background.
7
High Key lighting
  • High key light has the key light set to encompass
    a very large area.

Because it is very broad, it shows items in the
background.
Since it is brighter, it creates less tension and
makes the audience more comfortable.
8
Low Key Light
Look at his face and the shadows in the
background. The audience does not know what is
happening.
Or this!
In this image from the movie The Grapes of Wrath,
we see an example of low key lighting.
  • Low key light is a very narrow beam of light that
is on the character. No fill light is used.
This is done to fill the scene with shadows.

Low key light focuses a tight light beam on the
actor and does not show anything in the
background.
The audience doesnt know if this is what is in
the background waitng for him
9
Star Light
  • Stars in Hollywood (and around the world) often
get shot in different types of lights in order to
maximize their beauty/minimize any flaws with
    their skin or appearance.
  • Soft light/Star lighting is noticeable by the
fuzziness of the cheeks, the jaw line and the
    nose.

Notice how smooth her skin is. There are no
wrinkles, no pores.
