2Tourism Industry in India
- The tourism industry in India generated about
US100 billion in 2008 and that is expected to
increase to US275.5 billion by 2018 at a 9.4
annual growth - According to World Travel and Tourism, tourism in
India had the highest 10-year growth potential.
The Travel Tourism Competitiveness Report 2007
ranked tourism in India 6th in terms of price
competitiveness but 39th in terms of safety and
security. - According to the Tourism Satellite Accounting
(TSA) research, travel and tourism is expected to
contribute 6.1 per cent to India's national gross
domestic product (GDP) and provide almost 40
million jobs by 2018. - Foreign tourist arrivals during the period
JanuaryOctober 2008 increased by 370,000 to 4.32
million as compared to 3.95 million during the
corresponding period of 2007. - In the year 2002, the Government of India
announced a New Tourism Policy to give boost to
the tourism sector. The policy is built around
the 7-S Mantra of Swaagat (welcome), Soochanaa
(information), Suvidhaa (facilitation), Surakshaa
(security), Sahyog (cooperation), Sanrachnaa
(infrastructure) and Safaai (cleanliness).

Technologies
- Renewable energy technologies such as solar
photovoltaic, small hydro, biomass etc. are being
deployed for electrification of remote villages
and hamlets. - The aim of the projects should go beyond
electrification by addressing the total energy
requirements for cooking, electricity, and motive
power. - MNRE has already covered 118 un electrified
villages under Village Energy Security Project
