Plan more, write less.

• Use your 15 minutes planning time effectively.
• Find citations that support the prompt.
• Outline.

Thesis

• You will receive a prompt, not a question.
• Turn the statement into a question, or two,
  depending on the prompt.
• Make sure to include all aspects of the prompt.
• Answer the question that you have created. This
  is your thesis.

Go with what you know.

• Build your essay around your fiveanchors.
• Find the Latin that you know THROUGHOUT the
  passage and work with it.
• Get used to circling these anchors in the passage.

• The burden is on YOU to convince the reader that
  he/she knows the Latin.

Dont cite more than two lines.

This is not English class.

• You are responsible for the Latin and its
  analysis.
• Not necessarily a five paragraph essay.
• Introductions and conclusions may be dispensable.
• You will not receive points for references to
• Other literature
• Pop-culture
• Biographical information
• Autobiographical information

• Include analytical transitions
• When, since, although
• Avoid chronological transitions
• And, next, then, after that

• Even if it is correct and true, if it doesnt
  refer to the prompt, it doesnt belong in your
  essay.
• You will not get points for that information and
  you could lose points!
• Do not summarize the passage.

A Time and A Place

• Essays are not an opportunity to show your
  knowledge of poetic devices. They are not off
  limits, but tread lightly.
• Avoid basing an essay on
• Word order
• Sound effects
• Meter
• Figures of speech

How long does it have to be?

• There is no length guideline. In your completed
  essay you must have
• Covered the entire passage
• Anti-thesis okay
• Made all points applicable to prompt

How am I graded by the AP Board?

• You get a score 0-6, or a -.
• A score of 6 is a well-developed, well-written
  essay that includes appropriate Latin support.
• A score of 3 is a well-developed, well-written
  essay without any Latin support OR an essay
  without satisfactory arguments, but a good use of
  Latin.
• A score of 0 discusses Latin, but does not
  address the question.
• A score of has nothing to do with the Latin.
