A little about me
  • This is my 1st year in El Segundo Unified School
    District I previously taught middle school in
    LAUSD and, more recently, at Larchmont Charter
    School.
  • I have taught 6th 7th Grade English and 6th,
    7th, and 8th Grade History.
  • I am originally from NJ where I studied
    Journalism Theater Arts at Rutgers University.
  • I received my masters from UCLAs Teacher
    Education Program, a program that embodies a
    social justice agenda.
  • I love to integrate the arts (visual
    performing) into classroom lessons and projects.

Advisory in Room JM104
  • Advisory takes place every Monday with each
    students Period 2 teacher class
  • 6th grade will focus on what the International
    Baccalaureate program means for the school and
    for them as students.

Language A Goals for Students
  • to be engaged, lifelong readers and writers
  • to stretch students thinking and polish their
    critical thinking skills
  • to ask thoughtful questions around fiction and
    nonfiction texts
  • to look at multiple perspectives of real or
    imagined people
  • to analyze text, make a claim, use supporting
    evidence, and explain how their evidence supports
    their claim
  • to write narratives, expository research papers,
    and persuasive letters

    narratives, taking one story to the publishing
    phase

    literature short-essays, focusing on the
    structure of the paragraph (claim, evidence,
    explanation and analysis)

    on a topic of their interest and choice

Grading Policy
  • 100 Assessment-based grades
  • Students are consistently reassessed in order to
    determine their current level of mastery this
    way, they are able to improve replace their
    grade throughout the unit.
  • Standards are broken down into student-friendly
    Learning Targets (LT). You will see them on the
    first page of a unit in your childs notebooks.
  • Each student is graded out of a scale of 5 based
    on their mastery of the learning target.

  • Projects essays will be scored based on

Homework Policy
  • Students will have homework every night, but it
    is usually limited to reading their independent
    reading book.
  • Homework will be written down daily in their
    binder reminder.
  • Homework may also include finishing class
    assignments, reading passages to preview or
    review material, practicing skills learned in
    class, or working on class projects.
  • Due to the extensive amount of learning students
    are responsible for this year, students should
    review their notes every night to fully
    understand and retain important concepts.
  • Homework should take no longer than 30 minutes
    per night.
  • Consequences
  • Detention for 3 missed homework assignments
  • citizenship grade

Suggestions for how to support your child in
Language A Humanities
  • ask students about what they have been learning
    in class
  • inspect students notebook(s) for organization
  • look at/review Learning Target Logs
  • ask about homework do not help with homework
  • ask students when their unit tests are and remind
    them to study dates will be posted on the
    website at least two weeks ahead for unit tests.
  • have them talk about the plot of the book they
    are reading
  • model good reading and writing encourage them to
    read and write at home
  • when they give an opinion, ask them to explain
    their evidence
  • talk about current events, especially the
    upcoming election!
  • watch historical documentaries
  • reinforce high expectations at home
  • have students teach you a lesson!higher level
    thinking ?
