• We do a combination of shared reading, close
  reading, explicit instruction (whole and small
  group), and reciprocal teaching to meet all
  childrens needs.

Grammar and Spelling

• Students will have a spelling list each week,
  with a post test given on Friday.
• Spelling is linked directly to vocabulary,
  reading, and writing.
• The focus is on developing word knowledge and
  good spelling habits by utilizing phonics skills,
  recognizing patterns, as well as the use of
  prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
• Grammar and vocabulary work comes from the
  Wonders series and occurs daily. Assignments
  will be given from the series, however
  supplemental practice will be given as needed.

Math and Reading Workshops

• The intent is to meet the individual
  academic needs of all students in a
• small group setting.
• Groups are determined by data collected through
  various assessments and classroom work.
• Groups work on specific sets of skills in which
  students are having difficulties.
• Groups change throughout the year based on needs
  and new data collected.

Staying Organized

• Student Binder
• Your childs binder will contain the following
  planner, notes/handouts/study guides for each
  subject, in-class assignments, and the daily
  homework.
• Planner/Assignment Book
• This will contain the objectives covered for the
  day and will be filled out completely for you to
  review and sign. Students are to bring back
  their planner to school the following day.
• Friday Folder
• The Friday Folder will go home on Friday night
  and needs to be returned to school the following
  Monday. It will also contain important
  information from the classroom/school. Graded
  work will also be sent home in this folder.
  Please sign the sheet on the inside of the folder
  to acknowledge that you have reviewed the
  contents.

Daily Assignments

• 5th graders are expected to read 10-15 minutes
  every night.
• 5th grade students are expected to have, on
  average, 50 minutes of homework/class
  assignments each night per district guidelines.
• Monday-Thursday Daily homework for reading and
  math, Daily Math homework page (5 problems),
  and any in-class assignments that the student
  needs to have completed for class the next day.
• Friday Most assessments are given on this day.
  No homework and few in-class assignments are
  given on Fridays ?.

Daily Assignments

• Any in-class assignment that is not finished
  at school will go home for completion and will be
  due the following day. If an assignment is not
  completed the following day, the student will
  highlight it in his/her planner. 10 will be
  deducted from their grade once it is completed
  and turned in to me.
• Students will have the chance to complete any
  unfinished work on Friday in the Opportunity
  Room for 20 minutes. Students that have turned
  in all homework/assignments will participate in
  our Fun Friday time ?. Any assignment not
  received by the end of the quarter will result in
  a 0 in the gradebook.

CARE cards

• Our class expectation is that every day, each
  person demonstrates Productivity Effort
  Responsibility and Kindness. These align with
  our CARE goals for the school.
• Students have a punch card at their desk. They
  receive punches for demonstrating these
  expectations. When they have 20 punches, they
  choose a reward from the list of choices the
  class developed together.
• The class has a punch card, too ?! When the
  class receives compliments from other adults in
  the building, they receive a punch. 20 punches
  a class reward!
• Emphasis is on personal accountability as well as
  teamwork.

Celebrating Your Childs Birthday

• Please feel free to send treats to school for
  your childs birthday. Please send treats that
  can be cleaned up easily and do not require
  cutting (if they do, please send the proper
  utensils). For example Cupcakes, Cookies, or
  Ice Cream Bars.
• Birthdays are celebrated at different times
  throughout the day so it is best to send the
  treats to school in the morning.
• Please do not have your child pass out
  invitations to his/her birthday party, unless
  every child in the class is invited. Feelings
  can be hurt.

Odds and Ends

• Field Tripswe may need parent chaperones to help
  supervise students. No siblings are allowed to
  accompany the class. You will not be grouped
  with your child.
• Lunch- If you choose to eat lunch with your
  child, you may bring lunch for the two of you,
  but not other students.
