Title: What I didnt hear you

1
What? I didnt hear you!
  • Listening

2
Hearing vs. Listening
  • What is the difference between hearing and
    listening?
  • Hearing is a passive processit simply occurs
when the sound waves enter your ears.
  • Listening is an active processit involves taking
an active role and involves specific steps

3
The Listening Process
  • Selecting this is when we select the particular
sound we will listen to (music, conversation,
    television)
  • Attending this is when you focus on the sound
    (length of attention varies)
  • Understanding this is when you begin to assign
meaning to the message and interpret its meaning
(figure out intent, what is the speaker really
    saying?

4
The Process contd
  • Remembering this is when we recall what we have
heard in order to effectively respond to it (what
    did he just say?)
  • Responding this is when we give feedback,
answer questions, give a response to the message
we have listened to (blank stare, head nod,
verbal responsebe supportive, be honest, own up
to your response, dont try to solve their
    problems)
  • Back-channeling cues these are made while the
speaker is talking to let them know you are
listening (uh huh, I see, head nodding)

5
Barriers to Listening
  • Thoughts running through our heads self
    focuswhat am I doing tonight?
  • Emotional noisetrigger words, topics we have
strong opinions or differing opinions about
  • Egocentrismthe mistaken belief that your ideas
are more important than those of others
  • Information overloadtoo much information!!
  • False assumptionsassuming responsibility is on
the sender, assuming that talking has more
    advantages than listening

6
Bad Listening Habits
  • Static listener (no feedback, no expression)
  • Monotonous feedback giver (responds the same
    regardless of what you say)
  • Overly expressive listener (gives extreme
    responses)
  • Reader/writer (occasionally glances up)
  • Eye avoider (looks at everything but you)
  • Preoccupied listener (doing other things at the
    same time)
  • Waiting listener (waiting for their cue to speak)
  • Thought completing listener (finishes your
    sentences for you)

7
Effective Listening Styles
  • People orientedconcerned with creating and
    maintaining positive relationships
  • nonjudgmental, seek understanding, supportive
  • - can become overinvolved, lose ability to assess
    information
  • Action orientedconcerned with the task at hand
  • encourage conciseness, help get tasks done,
    well organized
  • - appear to minimize emotional concerns, can be
    off-putting to some
  • Content-orientedwant to hear details and analyze
    from variety of perspectives
  • explore many ideas for analysis, good when
    ideas are complicated
  • can annoy those who are not analytical, takes
    more time
  • Time-orientedmost concerned with efficiency
  • help keep things flowing, get things done
    quickly
  • - impatience can be straining, can prevent
    necessary thorough discussion

8
