Harry S Truman
  • Born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri, Harry S
    (only initial, no middle name) Truman, grew up
    and prospered as a farmer. In 1945, he took over
    as president, after F.D. Roosevelts sudden
    death. He was responsible for dropping the atomic
    bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After this he
    was nicknamed Give em hell Harry. He was
    re-elected in 1949. During this term, the Korean
    war was fought.

Doris Day
  • Doris Day was born on April 3, 1924 as Doris
    Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio. She
    first started her career when she was 16, touring
    with the Les Brown Band. She made her first
    movie, Romance on the High Seas, in 1948. She
    exploded onto the Hollywood scene with the movie
    Calamity Jane in 1953, The Man Who Knew Too Much
    in 1956, and Pillow Talk in 1959. She soon became
    an icon in the eyes of many in the 50s and 60s.
    Her last movie was With Six You Get Egg Roll in
    1968.

  • Johnnie Ray was born on January 10, 1927 in
    Hopewell Oregon. He began singing locally after
    partially losing his hearing in a youthful
    accident. His wild and brazen style of singing
    made him an instant international hit. His best
    known songs were Cry and The Little White
    Cloud that Cried. He wasnt as popular in the
    U.S. as overseas because of his open bisexuality
    and his many brushes with the law.

  • Walter Winchell, born on April 7, 1897, was one
    of the most influential news columnist
    broadcasters. He could literally make or break
    a show. He coined the phrase, America- love it
    or leave it. He died in 1972, and although he
    may have had fame in his younger years, he had a
    sudden and ongoing downfall. There was only one
    mourner present at his funeral. His own
    daughter.

    debuted in the major leagues in 1936 for the New
    York Yankees. In 1941, Joe set the record of base

    Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957.

  • Born on November 14, Joe McCarthy was one of the
    most grueling interrogators of the 50s. Guilty
    or innocent, McCarthy was known for ruining the
    lives of all suspects. Later, it was found that
    McCarthy was not one to interrogate suspects who
    would resist him, but rather those with weak
    personalities.

  • Richard Nixon was born on January 9th, 1913.
    Advancing his political career with the Hiss
    trial, he ran for the Senate and won. He then
    ran as vice-president to Eisenhower and then
    became the President himself.

Studebaker
  • The Studebaker first became popular in the
    1950s. The styling of the car made it seem as if
    the car was going backwards. There were also
    different variations of the Studebaker, including
    the Studebaker truck. This car was also an icon
    in pop culture. The manufacturing company of the
    Studebakers went out of business in 1966.

  • Though the television was first thought of as
    far back as the late 1800s, it did not become
    popular until about the 1940-50s. Most large
    cities only had one station. The television sets
    were only 10 inches, and in black and white.
    Color TV did not become popular until the
    mid-1960s.

  • Korea became separated into North and South at
    the end of World War II. North Korea was taken
    over by Communists, South Korea was still a free
    country. North Korea attacked South Korea in
    1950, beginning the Korean War. The United
    Nations sided with South Korea. The war ended in
    a draw. Korea is still divided today.

  • Marilyn Monroe, was born Norma Jean Mortenson
    on June 1st, 1929. Her first big movie role was
    in 1951, in the Love Nest. She became an
    overnight sensation and sex symbol. She married
    Joe DiMaggio in 1953. She was also rumored to
    have affairs with JFK and Robert Kennedy. On
    August 5th, 1962, she was founded dead on her
    kitchen floor. Some believe it was from a drug
    overdose, others suspect foul play.
