• Mario Giacomelli (1925-2000), Italian,
  photographed both people and the landscape. His
  high contrast graphic representations of plowed
  fields shot from above or across are icons in the
  history of documentation of the landscape.

• He depicts a rural Italy of villages and
  carefully tended landscapes, populated by men as
  wizened as olive trees and by women swaddled in
  the black of mourning. But Mr. Giacomelli's
  photographs are far from being straightforward
  documents. He shoots and prints with a remarkable
  adventurousness, using high contrast, startling
  compositions and other ploys to transform his
  images from matter-of-fact records into rich,
  evocative works.

• Inta Ruka selects her photographs by clearly
  described criteria. On every occasion we see a
  person, mainly in close eye contact with the
  viewer, that has been created by an intense
  moment of interaction (a lengthy conversation
  really) with the photographer. On every occasion
  the photograph is black and white and taken with
  a Rolleiflex.

• The photographer's curiosity and love of
  people has created a series of images that
  confirms life as a value in itself and the ethics
  within it. These works reconcile one with life
  and allow one to celebrate the very fact of being.
