2
Content
  • Overview
  • Research Groups within I.M.
  • Current Research Projects

3
Overview
  • Information Management Group is research active
    in the last 5 years
  • Obtained in excess of 658,000 in research
    grants
  • 53 refereed publications
  • 12 fulltime research degrees.
  • Emphasis not only on theoretical but on practical
    aspects (working demonstrations).

4
Overview
  • Multimedia Information Retrieval
  • MMIR is a subset of the CDVP Group.
  • Database Engineering and Interoperable Systems
  • ISG Research Group.
  • Educational Technologies
  • Educational Technology Group

5
Research Groups
6
Multimedia Information Retrieval
  • Multimedia Information Retrieval (MMIR)
  • Forms part of CDVP with Electronic Engineering.
  • Collaboations with CDVP include 28 refereed
publications since January 2000, in areas such as
video analysis, video indexing, and video
    retrieval.
  • Multimedia Information Retrieval addresses
    indexing, searching, browsing, retrieving,
    linking and summarising MM information

7
Interoperable Systems
  • Interoperable Systems Group (ISG)
  • Formed among database and software engineering
researchers in the School of Computer
    Applications
  • Obtained 3 Strategic Research and 1 Research
    Innovation Fund (RIF) grants.
  • Emphasis on both theoretical and practical
    aspects of computing.
  • Project goals generally include a prototype.

8
Educational Technology Group
  • To support strategic innovation and enhancement
of the University's Teaching and Learning
    activities
  • Teaching and Learning Fellowship award received
    by 3 members of group
  • Teaching-research areas include design and
    evaluation of multimedia, videoconferencing,
online learning environments to improve teaching
    and learning.

9
Research Projects
10
Music Retrieval
  • The Ceolaire project indexes digital music
    allowing melody retrieval.
  • For example, a user whistles or hums a tune
    (telephone/keyboard/screen) and Ceolaire will
find songs which match that melody.
  • Currently a database of 9,000 tunes exists and a
refinement of the underlying melody extraction
    and melody matching is on-going.
  • Funded under EI RIF project 2001-2003.

11
Web Retrieval
  • Google is currently the most infamous web search
engine its marketing claims it is the best
because it uses (hyper)links between web pages in
    retrieval.
  • The MMIR group have developed variations on
Googles search technology, and implemented these
    on c.1,000,000 downloaded web pages
  • These variations are more effective than Googles
    implementation.
  • Funded by Hewlett Packard equipment donation
    (US40k)

12
Healthcare
  • The OASIS project E.I. Funded Strategic Research
    Grant (1998-2000).
  • Aims To build a prototype of multiple
    heterogeneous healthcare applications using a
    common object model.
  • Output Working prototype with first ODMG global
view system 8 publications 3 research degrees.

13
Secure Protocols
  • The IOMPAR Project E.I. Funded Strategic
    Research Grant (2000-2002).
  • Aims To build a prototype which transports large
complex objects in a secure environment.
  • Status Ongoing with early prototype 3
    publications.

14
Video Storage and Distribution
  • The EGTv Project E.I. RIF Grant (2002-2004).
  • Aims To build a distributed storage system with
transactional capabilities for video and audio
    obejcts.
  • Status Started in March 2002.

15
Educational Technology
  • Setanta Project Launched by An Taoiseach in
    May, 2000.
  • Aim Undergraduates in C.A. develop courseware,
in collaboration with school teachers on the
M.Sc. for Education. Courseware developed to
    date includes
  • Virtual Art Gallery
  • Multimedia environment for specific learning
    difficulties
  • Interactive Maths Tutorial
  • www.compapp.dcu.ie/mfarren/research.html

16
Educational Technology
  • MOO Based Interactive Learning Environment
Collaborating with other Universities in Europe.
  • Aim To develop a virtual learning environment.
  • Established January 2002.
  • Video Learning Technology (with USA) The Digital
    Video Inquiry Collaboratory.
  • Aim To Build a Web site - Tools for Educators.
  • Established April 2002.
