• Base was faced with the removal of 58 buildings
• 7 Duplex housing units
• 7 WW II era barracks
• 44 wood-framed brick buildings
• DOD directive required a waste diversion of at
  least 40
• Work planned and executed in 4 Phases

Project

• 14th and Main Streets
• Site for new downtown 7-story parking deck
• 6-story concrete building and related 1-story
  laboratory 204,000 square feet
• Virginia Department of General Services developed
  contract to optimize a recycling and material
  conservation plan in a state construction project
  .

Project Goals

• Minimize the debris sent to the landfill.
• Recycle concrete on site.
• Dispose of asphalt and metal at recycling
  facilities.
• Reduce fuel consumption.
• Reduce the construction project cost for states
  new parking deck.

Project Results

• 10-month deconstruction project
• Reuse/salvage operation removed items that had
  potential reuse, including wiring, plumbing and
  fixtures
• Concrete from buildings was crushed on-site and
  was used as backfill material in preparation for
  the new parking deck
• Other materials sent to recycling/process
  facilities

Project Results

• Project savings estimated at almost 500,000
• Savings on procurement of fill material 12,750
  tons of concrete were recycled on-site
• Savings on disposal of construction debris
  14,000 tons of concrete, asphalt and metal were
  recycled
• Salvaged materials generated more than 60,000 in
  revenue
