Introduction
Back to Lesson Plan Web Page
  • Respiration is a process that all living
organisms must perform. Believe it or not
Plants respire!!! The term respiration is
used in two ways. At the cellular level,
respiration is the release of energy from the
breakdown of food in the presence of oxygen. At
the organismal level, respiration is the exchange
of carbon dioxide and oxygen between cells and
the blood. Throughout this webquest, you will
learn about the functions of the human
    respiratory system, importance, and disorders.

Task 1 Complete Worksheet
Back to Lesson Plan Web Page
  • Utilize the websites in the resource section to
answer the questions about the respiratory
system. The purpose of this task is to understand
the function, purpose and importance of the
    respiratory system. Review the human
respiratory system on the Internet first.

Task 2 Inspiration
Back to Lesson Plan Web Page
  • Open and inspiration document.
  • Use the link arrowheads and icons to graphically
demonstrate your understanding of how the
circulatory system and respiratory systems are
    interdependent.
  • Be sure to use terminology such as pharynx,
    trachea, bronchus, alveolus, diaphragm, etc.
  • Make sure that the arrowheads represent the
direction of gas exchange and be sure to annotate
    the links.

Task 3Respiratory Model
Back to Lesson Plan Web Page
  • You are to create a model to represent how
    breathing occurs.
  • Materials needed (colors are optional)
  • 6"x 4.5" (¼ sheet) piece of pink or
    gray construction paper (trachea)plastic 2-liter
soda bottle with black bottom cut off (thoracic
    cavity)two round 9" or 12" pink balloons
    (lungs)two drinking straws (bronchi)medium-sized
plastic bag large enough to fit over bottom end
of bottle (diaphragm)3 or 4 cotton balls
    transparent tapemedium-size, thin rubber band
  • Procedure
  • 1. Insert straws into balloons and tape together
at top. These are bronchi and lungs.
  • 2. Insert these through open bottom of modified
2-liter soda bottle straw end first and bring
ends of straws up through the neck of the bottle.
  • 3. Stuff neck of soda bottle with cotton balls
around straws until spaces are plugged.
  • 4. Roll construction paper into a tube just round
enough to fit over the tops of the straws. Tape
closed and place over tops of two straws. This
    will be the trachea.
  • 5. Place plastic bag over bottom end of bottle
and use the rubber band to hold it in place. This
    will serve as the diaphragm.
  • Grasp bottom of plastic bag and pull down and
push up. Watch as the "lungs" expand and contract
as you do this. Students may even bend "trachea"
and "bronchi" over so that the air supply is cut
off and watch as nothing happens when the
    "diaphragm" is manipulated.
  • Explain what happens as you manipulate the
    diaphragm.

    material
  • Correct grammatical, spelling, and sentence
    formation
  • Text and graphics complement the information

Conclusion
Back to Lesson Plan Web Page
  • I hope that you further understand the human
respiratory system. You should begin to see the
connections between the various human body
systems and recognize the importance of systems
working together. Remember to refer back to you
model of the respiratory system do remind you of
the functions of each part. Great Job and lets
    continue our journey!?
