Facts Of Neptune
Neptune is one of the two planets that cannot be
seen without a telescope. Neptune is about 30
times as far from the Sun as is Earth. But every
248 years Pluto moves inside Neptunes orbit.

How Neptune Was Discovered
No one suspected that there are planets beyond
Saturn until William Hershel, an English
astronomer, discovered one in 1781. Hershel had
set up a telescope in his backyard and was using
it to make a survey of the stars in the
constellation Gemin, The twins.

A Green Heavenly Planet
One night he noticed a greenish heavenly body
that looked a little larger than a star. Its
position shifted slightly from night to night, so
Hershel decided it must be a planet.

The Newly Discovered World
The newly discovered world was named Neptune.
This planet, enough like Uranus to be its twin.
It is over 2 ½ billion miles from the Sun and it
takes about 165 of our years to go around it. Not
until the year 2011 will Neptune be back at the
position it was first seen.
