Cancer Disparities Highlights / Legislative
Funding
  • On behalf of the the Consortium and the Maine
    Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (MCCCP), the
    City of Portlands Office of Minority Health,
    conducted a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment of
    women in the Portland area, utilizing the
    National Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Risk
    Assessment Tool (BRAT)3.
  • Results
  • - 222 Individuals surveyed and counseled about
    the need for mammogram and pap test and follow-up
    with their primary care physicians.
  • - 49 were referred for mammogram and Pap test
    (22).
  • Racial Minority Oversampling Project 80,000

  • The Prevention Work group developed and
    distributed cancer prevention presentation and
    toolkit to over 50 organizations across the
    state.
  • The Skin Cancer Work Group
  • Developed a Maine specific skin cancer/sun
    protection awareness brochure, poster and
    bookmark.

  • Received a 3,000 mini grant from the MCCCP and
    2,000 from the Melanoma Foundation of New
    England for its projects.
  • Partnered with the American Cancer Society to
    sponsor a legislation to enforce the Tanning
    Booth Law this past October.
  • Tanning Booths Laws/Regulation Project 60,000.

Early Detection Highlights
  • Early Detection Work Group in partnership with
    the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer,
    sponsored a Prostate Cancer session and lunch
    discussion at the MMCs 17th Annual Oncology
    Symposium
  • Colorectal Cancer Taskforce in partnership with
    the American Cancer Society, hosted a Colorectal
    Cancer Summit in March of 2007.
  • Three Consortium Organizations, ACS, Maine Cancer
    Foundation and the MCCCP funded 7 mini-grants to
    Healthy Maine Partnerships to raise Awareness of
    Colorectal Cancer Screening in their communities.

  • Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, MCCCP,
    Maine Medical Center and the City of Portlands
    Office of Public Health partnered to conduct a
    Colorectal Cancer Screening Pilot.

  • On behalf of the Consortium and MCCCP the Hospice
    Council assessed the needs of immigrant
    communities (Somali, Sudanese, and Latino
    immigrant communities) around end-of-life care.
  • The Palliation Work Group in collaboration with
    the Maine Hospice Council, conducted a
    stakeholder meeting to discuss barriers to
    utilization of the Maine Medicare Hospice
    Benefit.
