2What is an A School?
- Charleston High School has been selected by
the Missouri Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education as an A School grant
recipient.
3What is an A School?
- The A Schools Grant provides the opportunity
and funding for Charleston to make basic changes
designed to guide students in a rigorous program
of academic and technical education that will
prepare them for the workplace, post-secondary
vocational or/technical school (training), or
college.
4The History of A Schools
- May 26,1992 Gubernatorial Candidate Mel
Carnahan issued his Educational Plan for Missouri
entitled, World Class Schools for Missouri,
with A Schools Program as a Centerpiece of
Education Reform
- May 1993 S.B. 380 the Outstanding Schools Act
Passes the General Assembly and is passed into
law by Governor CarnahanA Schools included
in school reform.
- August 28,1993 S.B. 380, The Outstanding
Schools Act goes into effect.

- March 1994 Charleston applies for
A Grant. (failed) - March 1995 Charleston again applies for
A Grant. (failed) - March 1996 Charleston applies for the third
time for A Grant.
(failed) - June 15,1997Charleston applies for the fourth
time. (Awarded A grant )
6Whats Happening in our Society Today?
- 53 of the youth in our Nation, who are 18-24
years of age, have either never left home or have
moved back into the home. - 75 of all the new jobs in the future will not
require a 4-year college education, but will
require specialized skills and training from
education beyond high school.
7Whats Happening in our Society Today?
- Only 77 of Missouris high school students
graduate every year. - People with less education are more likely to be
unemployed.

take advantage of the A Program!

- To ensure that all students graduatefrom school.
- To ensure that all students complete a selection
of high school studies that is challenging
and has identified learning experiences.
- To ensure that all students proceed from high
school graduation to a college, a post-secondary
vocational or technical school, or a high wage
job with workplace skill development
opportunities.

consecutive years prior to high school
graduation. - Attempted to secure all available federal
financial assistance funds that do not require
repayment.
