8HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY
1745 The Collegium Carolinum is founded as an
advanced educational institution between
grammar school and university. In addition to
the humanities and fine arts, mathematical and
technical subjects are also taught. 1862 The
Collegium Carolinum becomes a Polytechnical
School with eight different mathematical and
scientific departments. 1968 The TH is renamed
Technische Universität (TU). 1972 The TU is the
first university in Lower Saxony to initiate a
degree program in computer science. 1987 Braunschw
eig is the first German university to offer
courses in Biotechnology and Biochemical
Engineering. 1995 The TU celebrates ist 250th
anniversary with the motto project
future. 1999 Introduction of the
interdisciplinary degree programs of Information
System Technics, Financial and Econo- mical
Mathematics and the international Masters degree
program Computational Sciences in Engineering.
2000 Opening of a new campus for the faculty of
Humanities and Education. New degree program
offered in Bioengineering. 2001 Opening of the
new IT Center and of the Center for Aeronautical
and Space Research. Founding of the Center of
Mechatronics.
