A Talent of His Own Hoppy Spider was the
oldest in his family. He had younger twin
brothers who got attention because they were
identical and a little sister who always got
complimented on her beauty. Hoppy wanted a
talent that would set him apart from his brothers
and sister. He entered a web-building contest.
He practiced day after day. When his friends
passed by he smiled and waved. On the day of
the contest Hoppy made his best web ever. The
judges gave him the best score and a first place
blue ribbon. Hoppys family crowded around
him and gave him lots of attention. They talked
about his great web making talent. Hoppys dream
had come true! He finally had a talent of his
own.

Spiders You may think that spiders are
insects, but theyre not. An easy way to tell a
spider from an insect is by looking at the legs.
Spiders have eight legs and insects have six.
Spiders also have two main body parts while
insects have three. Spiders can be helpful.
They eat insects. This helps control the insect
population. Some spiders build webs to catch
insects. Others hunt their food. Spiders
can also be dangerous. One extremely poisonous
spider is the black widow. The black widow can
be recognized by a huge red hourglass shape on
its belly. It lives in a web.
