Introduction
  • There were 4 main waves of the Scottish
    immigration to Canada.
  • The first lasted from 1700 to 1815.
  • The second went from 1815 to 1845.
  • The third wave was from 1845 to 1860.
  • Finally the fourth and final wave was from 1860
    to 1920.
  • Now lets get into detail!

3
Wave 1. 1700-1815
  • The Scots started to immigrate out of Scotland in
    1700.
  • The religious and political punishment forced
    them to leave.
  • In the 19th century, those who remained didnt
have a choice. They were forced to leave.
  • Many, when they arrived to Canada, recruited to
    the Hudsons bay Company.

Ministers, Sir John A Macdonald and Alexander
    Mackenzie, were from Scotland!!!

5
Wave 2. 1815-1845
  • In 1815 many Scots left without work.
  • Those who kept their jobs were paid the absolute
    minimum wage.
  • With the end of the war in 1815, the government
no longer needed a large number of recruits.
  • The government now started enforcing immigration
    over sea.

One of The Scottish Flags, Saltine.
  • In Scotland there are 2 flags.
  • This is the first Scottish flag.

Wave 3 1845-1860
  • It was estimated that in the 18th century there
was a great starvation every three years.
  • The highlanders relied on the potato as there
    main source of food.
  • The starvation also caused more Scots to
immigrate to Canada, Nova Scotia, and New France.
  • The Scots were sent to those places by Lord
    Selkirk.

9
Lord Selkirk
  • Lord Selkirk was the person you learned about in
    the slide we saw earlier.
  • Here he is!!

10
Wave 4 1860-1920
  • Immigration out of Scotland consisted at a steady
    pace.
  • Short periods of intense immigration occurred
serious industrial depressions in the mid 1880s
    and 1906 to 1913.
  • Unlike the immigrants of the earlier faces, the
majority in the period after 1860 were skilled
laborers, interpreters, and professionals in all
    they do.

11
