Title: The Meaning of the Cross Pt 2:

1
  • The Meaning of the Cross Pt 2
  • The Purpose of Christs Coming
  • Matt 211-9

2
  • 1 And when they had approached Jerusalem and had
come to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then
Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go
into the village opposite you, and immediately
you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with
her untie them, and bring them to Me. 3 "And if
anyone says something to you, you shall say, 'The
Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will
send them." 4 Now this took place that what was
spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled,
    saying,
  • 5 "Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold your
King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a
donkey, 6 And the disciples went and did just as
Jesus had directed them, 7 and brought the donkey
and the colt, and laid on them their garments, on
which He sat. 8 And most of the multitude spread
their garments in the road, and others were
cutting branches from the trees, and spreading
them in the road. 9 And the multitudes going
before Him, and those who followed after were
crying out, saying, "Hosanna to the Son of
David Blessed is He who comes in the name of the
    Lord
  • Hosanna in the highest!" Mt 211-9 NASB

3
  • Four reasons for the coming of Christ.
  • 1. Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness
  • He came to fulfill all that was written
concerning the coming Messiah and the coming
Kingdom of God in the Old Testament.

4
  • At His Baptism
  • "Permit it at this time for in this way it is
fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness."
  • Mt 315, NASB

5
  • After His Baptism
  • 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in
Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of
Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what
was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
  • 15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of
    Naphtali,
  • By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles
  • 16 "The people who were sitting in darkness saw
    a great light,
  • And to those who were sitting in the land and
    shadow of death,
  • Upon them a light dawned."
  • 17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
  • Mt 413-14 NASB

6
  • His final entry into Jerusalem
  • 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in
    triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem!
  • Behold, your king is coming to you He is just
and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted
on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a
    donkey.
  • Zec 99 NASB
  • 5 "Behold, the days are coming," declares the
Lord, "When I shall raise up for David a
righteous Branch And He will reign as king and
act wisely And do justice and righteousness in
    the land.
  • Jer 235 NASB

7
  • Jesus was the complete fulfillment of the Old
    Testament and all the Bible

8
  • Four reasons for the coming of Christ.
  • 1. Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness
  • 2. Jesus was personally obedient.

9
  • 7"Then I said, 'Behold, I have come (In the
roll of the book it is written of Me) To do Thy
    will, O God.'"
  • 8 After saying above, "Sacrifices and offerings
and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
Thou hast not desired, nor hast Thou taken
pleasure in them" (which are offered according to
the Law), 9 then He said, "Behold, I have come to
do Thy will." He takes away the first in order to
establish the second. 10 By this will we have
been sanctified through the offering of the body
of Jesus Christ once for all.
  • Heb 107-10, NASB

10
  • Four reasons for the coming of Christ.
  • 1. Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness
  • 2. Jesus was personally obedient.
  • 3. Jesus came to make the moral law complete

11
  • Mt 517 "Do not think that I came to abolish
the Law or the Prophets I did not come to
    abolish, but to fulfill. NASB

12
  • Jesus said unless our righteousness exceeded
that of the Scribes and Pharisees we will not
    enter heaven.
  • (Matt 520)

13
  • How in the World is that possible??

14
  • 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me,
that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what
is good is with me, but there is no ability to do
it. 19 For I do not do the good that I want to
do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to
    do.
  • Ro 718-20 (HCSB)

15
  • Four reasons for the coming of Christ.
  • 1. Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness
  • 2. Jesus was personally obedient.
  • 3. Jesus came to make the moral law complete
  • 4. Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice for
    us.

16
  • The Law was clear death is the penalty for sin.
(Genesis 217) That was both physical death and
    spiritual death.
  • This is amplified in the New Testament in Rom
    623.

17
  • 3 For what does the Scripture say? "And Abraham
believed God, and it was reckoned to him as
righteousness." 4 Now to the one who works, his
wage is not reckoned as a favor, but as what is
due. 5 But to the one who does not work, but
believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his
faith is reckoned as righteousness. So too our
    faith is reckoned as righteousness.
  • Ro 43-5 NASB

18
  • How can our righteousness exceed that of the
Scribes and Pharisees? Only by faith in Jesus
    Christ.
  • On the cross Jesus paid it all. He atoned for
our sin, gave us access to God and provided an
    example by which to live.
