Project
Taking costume drama as her theme, Nadine
analysed the range of film and TV drama
interpretations of Pride and Prejudice over
half a century. In particular, she considered
the treatment of social class and gender through
the ways that both setting and costume have been
selected and deployed over time. Her project was
presented in a novel way. She chose an A1 sketch
book and used a mixture of arts media. She even
emulated the Ahlbergs Jolly Postman genre and
interspersed in the text were intricate inserts
of letters, pictures and collages of fabric
swatches.
She was able to apply the skills she was
developing in her ASL courses. In particular,
she employed screen printing and appliqué
techniques to decorate a ten metre length of
diaphanous organza.
A two-week placement half way through year 12
followed by a week in the Autumn term of yr 13,
with a local bespoke bridal wear designer, where
Nadine learnt the rudiments of pattern cutting
and fitting. She also worked front of house
during a collaborative bridal wear show. Between
the first and second blocks and as a major
personal challenge, Nadine was invited to design
and execute a panel to act as a backdrop for
showing the Autumn collection.
