About Habitat...
  • Its mission is to develop communities in
    partnership with people in need by building
    houses and providing decent homes for people to
    live and grow.
  • Habitat build houses with those in need and sells
    them to the homeowner.
  • Mortgages are more affordable due to no-interest
    loans offered through Habitat.
  • In return, homeowners invest 300-500 hours of
    sweat equity building their own or other
    Habitat homes.

Crew Leader Responsibilities, etc
  • Meet with house leader prior to 730 am to
    understand crew assignments for the day
  • Oversee crew of 3-5 volunteers
  • Provide safety coaching to crew
  • Emphasize leading the job vs doing the job
  • Demonstrate tasks and skills to crew
  • Assure that work meets quality requirements

Safety Hazards
  • Review safety huddle talking points for Molding
    and doors
  • Safety glasses when using pneumatic hammer
  • Set blade depth to no more than 1/2 deeper than
    cut. (Minimizes danger)

Hanging Doors - Basics
  • Doors should always swing into walls
  • Bedroom doors should always open in
  • Closet doors should always open out into room
  • Right hand Vs. left hand
  • knob position relative to exposed hinge
  • The key - constantly check door swing and
    closing throughout process. Reveal (gap)
    should be consistent

  • Check note hinge side of rough opening for
    plumb
  • Separate jam
  • Be sure to put inner jam into room before
    mounting door (closets)
  • be sure door swings freely before mounting
    (remove nails packaging before mounting door)

  • Use shims in opposing pairs
  • Shim
  • wherever screws go through frame
  • behind hinges,
  • above and below latch,
  • Not too tight or loose
  • Mirror shim locations opposite sides

  • Fasten from one end to other (dont work to
    center)

  • Assure window jam is square (carpenters square)
  • Determine measurements
  • 1x6
  • Rip to width
  • Cut to length (3 wider than opening)
  • Router / round over edges

  • Cut first notch
  • measure second notch from first

  • Fasten using adhesive and nails
