4Habitat Construction Leadership
- MAIN MISSION - Insure all volunteers are engaged
in a safe, productive manner. - (Volunteers are already inspired and motivated
our job is not to ruin their enthusiasm) - FOUR FUNCTIONS
- COACH - demonstrate the proper way to do the
assigned task, teach necessary skills, organize
the work group. - SAFETY - insure proper procedures are followed
and required safety equipment is used. - QUALITY CONTROL - maintain high standards while
completing tasks on schedule. - FOSTER TEAMWORK build team environment make it
fun. (Please, thank you and good job are
the magic words)
5Habitat Construction Leadership
- Crew Leader Responsibilities
- Meet with house leader and get tasks for the day
- Supervise equipment set-up and end-of-the day
cleanup - Gather appropriate work group for each task
- Observe safety, ensure quality, and engage
volunteers - If you are working and volunteers are standing
around, we have failed - What We Want to Avoid
- Construction expert with huge tool belt tackling
the real tasks with a helper or two. Put the
tool belt away and only help when necessary. - Volunteer idleness inefficiency apathy
6Habitat Construction Leadership
- Crew Leader Training Goals
- The primary intent of the training is to get crew
leader crew leaders familiar with Habitat
construction techniques and with build-specific
items - We dont expect crew leaders to be experts in
framing after attending the training session - Our hope is that many of the things you see in
the training will be visible on the construction
site

42Cement Siding - Quality Checks
- Lath starter strip level and straight (start with
lowest corner on building) - Corner trim boards installed straight and plumb
- Ladders / ladder jacks securely braced
- Siding panels level and nailed snug
- HardiTrim pieces at top of walls properly
installed - All gaps at corners, doors and windows properly
caulked. - Materials restacked, site cleaned, tools put away
43Cement Siding Starter Strip
- Establish the low point on the house.
- Bottom edge of starter strip should flush with
top of masonry foundation wall. - Use transit to mark lines at same level at two or
more points along wall. - Connect points by chalking a line.
- Establish additional points at all corners, both
sides of door openings, and middle of long walls.
- Snug the starter strip with 1 1/2" galvanized
siding nails every 16". Continue until the strip
extends around the entire house. - Begin 4" from house corner and 2" from each side
of a door opening
44Cement Siding Handling Panels
45Cement Siding Laying-Out Panels
- Begin the layout of the first course siding at
end of the far left wall - Install the ¼" lath strip to ensure consistent
plank angle. - Begin the first course at the end of the far left
wall The second course begins at the next firing
strip (16" or 24") to the right. - The third course begins by moving to the next
firing strip (16" or 24") from the second course. - The fourth course begins by moving to the next
firing strip (16" or 24") from the third course. - The fifth course moves back to the firing strip
and the sequence continues.
46Cement Siding
47Cement Siding - Installation
- Fasten panels every 16" at firing locations.
- Butt end of first panel against corner trim.
- First run should overlap lath strip by no more
than 1¼". - Nail panels at top edge of panel no less than ¾"
to 1" from the edge of panel ( this is so nail is
hidden by overlap) - Nail panel at no closer than 1" from the edge.
- Next panel should be butted up with moderate
contact to the adjacent panel. - Make sure that bottom edges are flush and ends
are tight.
48Cement Siding
49Cement Siding
- Drive nails into 1 x 4firing strips.
- Drive so they snug against siding.
- Avoid denting siding panels.
50Cement Siding Windows Doors
- Notch siding to fit around bottom of opening.
- Avoid butt joints near openings
- Layout notch
- Measure distances from last siding piece to
opening, - Measure width of the opening and the depth of the
notch - Transfer measurements to a piece of siding and
cut. - Use the same process to measure at the tops of
windows and doors to layout the notches. - Use HardiTrim trim boards to finish the siding
around doors and windows.
51Cement Siding
52Cement Siding
53Cement Siding
54Cement Siding Gable Vents
- The gable vent is flush mounted in the center of
the gable and just low enough so that it is at
least 6" away from the ladder overhang. - No additional blocking is necessary.
- The gable vents may come with a pre-built J-Mold
wrap that is removed during siding and replaced
after the siding panels are in place. - This gable vent is typically only ornamental,
so theres no need to cut through the sheathing
behind it.
55Cement Siding Siding on Gable Walls
- Cut ends against gable overhang on same angle as
roof pitch. - Use scrap pieces to mark for cuts.
- Set short piece of siding on top of the last
piece of siding that has been installed and move
it toward the gable overhang until the top edge
of the siding touches the inside edge of the
overhang. - Lay another scrap piece of siding, parallel to
the overhang, and mark along the edge where it
crosses the first short siding panel. - Cut angle on horizontal piece of siding and use
this piece as a pattern for marking the other
pieces to be cut. - Last piece of siding at top of gable wall, will
be cut at an angle on both ends, forming a small
triangle. - Fasten this piece to the wall by nailing at least
¾" from the top edge of the panel. ( pre-drill ) - Nails are covered by the HardiTrim trim pieces
that are installed around the perimeter edges of
the house.
56Nova Brick Siding
- What is Nova Brick Siding
- It is a mortar-less brick siding that is attached
with screws and an intergrated hanging channel. - Now I will show you the Nova Brick PDF from the
Habitat Construction manual. CST 16b
57Nova Brik
58Cement Siding Soffit and Fascia
- Install vinyl soffit panels.
- Follow the soffit and fascia instructions in the
construction manual chapter on vinyl siding
installation (Chapter 16).
59Quality Checkpoints Soffit
____ Starter strip level and straight (start
with lowest corner on building) ____ Corner posts
straight and plumb ____ Ladders / ladder jacks
securely braced ____ Siding panels level and
nailed tight to gather and flush on the
bottom ____ Lap joints in siding away from main
traffic pattern ____ Siding trim at top of walls
properly installed ____ Last piece of siding at
top of wall crimped and securely fastened ____ ¼"
gap where siding is cut around windows and doors
and at corners of house ____ Soffit properly
installed ____ Corners of fascia lapped
correctly ____ All materials restacked, site
cleaned up, tools accounted for and put away
60Installing F channel and Soffit
- F channel
- Install F channel level from the bottom of the
gutter boards. - Do this by establishing your 2 end points and
snapping a chalk line. ( using framing square or
4 level) - (Bird boxes should be attached by now.)
- The top of the F-Channel should line up with this
chalk line. The F shaped slot should face away
from the house to receive the soffit material.
Nail the F-Channel to the wall firing using 1.5"
roofing nails (or similar). - You can cut the vinyl with shears.
- If you have to change directions notch material
to make a mitered corner.
61Soffit
62Installing Soffit
- Soffit fits in the F channel.
- Soffit should start from one end add go to the
other. Nailing flange out. - You can cut the vinyl with shears or with a
circluar saw with the blade turned backwards. - Allow the soffit to expand and contract. Do this
by not nailing material firmly, allow 1/8 gap
in nailing flange. - Use roofing nails only nailing flange. If you nee
to add nails other places (Please) use fascia
nails.
63Soffit Installation Continued
- Once you install you first piece, the next locks
into the nailing flange of the previous piece. - Then nail in the gutter board side of the nailing
flange. - You continue this until you have reached the
opposite end of the house, then you cut the last
piece to fit the space nail in the peak with a
fascia nail.
64What not to do
Notice the improper nails in the soffit. And
there is no need to F channel around the
perimeter of the bird box. Outside corner is to
low.

possible. - Nail fascia in a about a every 2 and alternate
top bottom, top bottom. (using fascia nails) - Nail within the top 1 ½ and the very bottom up
through the peak of the soffit. ( this helps
prevent dimples). - This ensure that you get nice clean lines
67Fascia Installation Continued
- To cut fascia you can use shears and utility
knife. - Use the shear or snip when it is a hidden cut.
- Any visible cut use a utility knife.
- When make plumb or level cuts mark material with
