Hieroglyphics

• Hieroglyphics help us learn about ancient
  Egyptian lives. They were individual
  picture-signs, and symbols that stood for
  different letters.

Hieroglyphics were carved or painted on the walls
of temples and tombs, on burial equipment, on
pieces of jewelry, and on false doors.

The Nile River

• The Nile is the worlds longest river
• Every year between July and October, the river
  flooded
• The flood water from the Nile River helped
  ancient farmers turn the Nile Valley into a
  productive agricultural region because of the
  rich soil it produced
• Egypt is called the gift of the Nile
• The Nile provided needed food and water in the
  desert

Pyramids

• There are about 80 pyramids known today from
  ancient Egypt
• The pyramids of Egypt are the oldest of the seven
  wonders of the ancient world and are the only
  wonder to survive to the present day
• The three largest and best preserved of the
  pyramids were built at Giza at the beginning of
  the Old Kingdom
• The most well know was built for pharaoh Khufu
  and is known as the Great Pyramid

Pharaohs of Egypt

• The pharaoh was the religious, civil,
• and military leader of Egypt
• The pharaoh had great political power in Egypt
• Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was a child
  of the sun god Ra and deserved to be worshiped
• Menes became the first pharaoh of Egypt
• Pharaoh Khufu ordered construction of the Great
  Pyramid
• Pharaoh Ahmose set out to make Egypt a strong
  military power
• Hatshepsut was the wife of a pharaoh and became
  pharaoh when her husband died

Valley of the Kings

• It is located on the west bank of the Nile,
  opposite the modern town of Luxor
• Is the burial place of 30 New Kingdom pharaohs
• The most well known pharaoh is Tutankhamun
• Tombs contain many rooms with carved and painted
  hieroglyphic texts and magical and symbolic
  scenes

The Sphinx

• Sphinx, in ancient Egypt, the stone figure of a
  lion in a resting posture, the upper part of the
  body being that of a human
• The most famous of all Egyptian sphinxes is the
  Great Sphinx at Giza
• The riddle of the sphinx What is it that has
  four feet in the morning, two at noon, and three
  at night?
• The answer is man he crawls on four limbs as a
  baby, walks upright on two as an adult, and walks
  with the aid of a stick in old age

Mummies

• Mummy is a term used to describe a human body
  that has been preserved through embalming
  techniques
• The Egyptians embalmed their dead because they
  believed that the deceased were reborn after
  death, and so the would need their bodies for
  existence in the afterlife
• The earliest Egyptian mummies, discovered at the
  southern city of Hierakonpolis, date from about
  the year 3400 BC

• Ancient Egypt, a civilization that thrived along
  the Nile River in northeastern Africa for more
  than 3,000 years
• From about 3300 BC to 30 BC - it was the
  longest-lived civilization of the ancient world
• Great pyramids, hieroglyphics, elaborately
  decorated underground burial chambers, sprawling
  temple complexes, and statues combining human and
  animal forms are some of the historical gifts
  that survived from ancient Egypt and are still
  being studied today
