RESPONSIBLE TOURISM for fighting poverty?
  • INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION
  • Resolution on tourism and development 2004/2212
    Europena Union
  • UN-WTO agency and UNCTAD, launched in june 2002
    the Programme Sustainable Tourism as a tool for
    Elimination of Poverty (ST-EP).
  • Canary Islands declaration on Tourism in Least
    Developed Countries (2001) define tourism as a
    mean for increasing participation in global
    economy, poverty alleviation and reaching
    socio-economic progress.

    especially in the 49 poorest countries (LDC,
    Least Developed Countries), tourism is the third
    source of income

DEFINITION
  • Responsible Tourism is inspired by principles of
    social and economic justice, and it fully
    respects the environment and the local cultures.
    Responsible Tourism is tourism which recognizes
    of the host community a central role and its
    rights to decide about its own tourism
    development seen as sustainable and social
    development of the territory. Responsible tourism
    facilitates the interactions among the tourist
    industry, the local community and travellers.
