Utilize Media and Materials
  • This unit plan consists of seven days

8
Day 1
  • I will introduce the text Sir Gawain and the
Green Knight to the class and discuss the author.
  • The students will log onto their computers and do
research directed by me on the Gode Cookery
Presents Tales of the Middle Ages website.
  • They will view middle ages art dealing with King
Arthurs court on the Norton Anthology of English
    Literature Norton Topics online site
  • The students will write down three interesting
facts they find on the websites and hand them in.
  • Volunteers will be asked to share a couple of
    their facts.

9
Day 2
  • The class will have an Old English riddle as the
bell-ringer, which will take five to seven
    minutes of class time.
  • Part I of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight will be
    summarized with open discussion.
  • The character journals will be introduced and
    explained to the class.
  • The students will be instructed to record in
their character journals the characters in the
rest of the poem while they are reading, while
Part I will be done in class.

10
Day 3
  • A drawing of the Green Knight and his horse will
be submitted as the bell ringer.
  • The second part of the text will be discussed,
    reading specific passages aloud.
  • The character journals will be reviewed and
discussed for the second part of the poem.

11
Day 4
  • Another riddle will be used as the bell ringer.
  • The third part of the text will be discussed,
    reading specific passages aloud.
  • The third part of Sir Gawain and the Green
    Knight will be openly discussed.
  • Discussion of the character journals will take
    place.

12
Day 5
  • An opinion of the book will be submitted as the
    bell ringer.
  • The final part of the poem, Part IV, will be
    discussed today.
  • Key passages will be read aloud by students, and
revisions will be made to the character journals.
  • The students will turn the character journals in.

13
Day 6
  • An image from the middle ages will be drawn for
    the bell ringer.
  • A two page paper will be assigned today.
  • The students will have a choice of either doing
it on symbolism in Sir Gawain and the Green
Knight, or an in depth character analysis.
  • Both of these paper types will be discussed, as
well as the review of proper organization of
    essays.
  • The rest of class time will be designated to
working on the paper in class.

14
Day 7
  • The bell ringer will be to get into groups of
    three.
  • The students will revise each others papers for
    grammatical errors and misspelled words.
  • This revision will be directed by worksheets on
how to revise papers that I will give out.
  • The changes to the papers will be done by the
owner and to the papers and turned at the end of
class, along with each persons revision sheets.

15
Require Learner Participation
  • One way I will require students to be on task is
beginning the class with a bell ringer each day.
  • This will assist in getting the students quiet
and working throughout the rest of the class.
  • Another way the students will stay on task and
interested is through the frequent class and
    group discussions.

16
Evaluate and Revise
  • The students will be evaluated through the
    assignments they turn in.
  • These assignments include daily bell ringers (6),
character journal, two page paper, and revision
    paper.
