3
Introduction
  • Cellular phones are portable/wireless
    communication devices.
  • The cellular system uses many base stations to
divide a service area into multiple 'cells'.
  • Dr. Martin Cooper invented the first portable
handset and made the first cellular phone call in
    April of 1973.
  • Public trials began in Chicago in 1978 with 2000
    customers.
  • By 1983 the first commercial analog cellular
phone service was made available in Chicago.

4
Introduction
  • Over the past two decades cellular phones have
matured into versatile devices with millions of
    subscribers worldwide.

5
Cell Phone Dangers
  • Cellular phones require a lot of power in order
to emit radiofrequency energy at a high enough
level to reach base stations that could be at
distances of kilometers into the double digits.
  • Two of the known health risks that this high
energy device could impose are cancer caused by
radiation emitted from the antenna and injury
from a damaged or faulty battery.
  • This presentation will deal with the dangers
    posed by the battery.

6
My Thoughts
  • With the high demand for cellular phones
companies have been releasing new phones very
    quickly.
  • It is possible that many of these phones are not
properly tested before being released in the
    market.
  • Companies may not want to spend the extra money
and time in developing safer phones.

7
Reasons For My Decision
  • Recently there have been several cases of
    cellular phones spontaneously combusting.
  • In some of these cases the user was seriously
    injured.
  • My cellular phone spontaneously combusted.

8
Other Explanations for the Danger
  • In many of these cases the victim was using
unapproved accessories on their cellular phone.
  • These include aftermarket batteries/chargers and
signal boosting devices that are placed near the
    battery.
  • Incidents are statistically extremely rare.

9
Conclusion
  • If it was discovered that cellular phones are too
dangerous to be used in their present form many
companies would be put out of business or have to
spend a lot of time and money to develop safer
    technologies.
  • If something is not done millions of people could
suffer the negative effects of cellular phone
    use.
  • I was not using any unapproved accessories on my
    cellular phone.?
