Flag of Wales
The Welsh Dragon
The Welsh dragon doesnt appear on the flag of
the United Kingdom because when the first Union
Flag was created in 1606, Wales was already
united with England. Wales was conquered by
England in the 13th Century. In 1536, under Henry
VIII, the Act of Union joined England and Wales
officially. Therefore Wales is represented by the
English Flag instead of the Welsh dragon

THE SAINT PATRON OF WALES
  • The patron saint of Wales is Saint David.
  • St David's Day celebrated annually on March 1.
  • St. David (520601) was a missionary and he
created 12 monasteries. His symbol is the leek.
The best-known miracle associated with St. David
is said to have taken place on an occasion when
he was preaching in the middle of a crowd. When
people at the back said that they could not see
or hear him, the ground on which he stood , risen
up to form a small hill so that everyone had a
    good view.

THE EMBLEMS OF WALES
LEEK - the national vegetable emblem of Wales.
On March 1- St. David's Day, patriotic Welsh
wear a leek on their clothing. According to a
legend the leek was associated with St. David
because he told his soldiers to wear it on their
helmets in a battle against the pagan Saxon
invaders of Britain that took place in a field
full of leeks.
Daffodil - It is the most common spring flower
found in Wales and is used instead of the
leek in many official ceremonies .

THE LAND OF CASTLES
The Welsh would like you to know that Britain is
made up of three countries, England, Scotland and
Wales. Wales is the smallest of the three
countries--only 160 miles long and 60 miles
wide--and has a great many treasures packed into
its borders as anyone would expect from the
homeland of King Arthur and Merlin. With its 400
fortresses, it is sometimes called the Land of
Castles. Most were built under order of King
Edward 1 to keep the unruly Welsh in check.

This little corner of Britain has got its Big
Country skies, green rolling hills with sheep and
ancient inns and castles.

A TASTE OF WALES
Traditional Welsh cooking derives from the diet
of the working man fisherman, farmer, coal miner
or labourer.  Thus fresh vegetables from the
garden, fish from the rivers, lakes or sea, meat
from the family pig etc. form the basis of
traditional Welsh cooking.
13
Sport
The most popular sports in Wales are Rugby Union
and Football. There is a debate about which is
truly the national sport. The Welsh national
rugby union team takes part in the annual Six
Nations Championship, and the Rugby Union World
Cup. Welsh teams also play in the Celtic League
and the European Heineken Cup. Wales has its own
football league since 1992.
