• Was the first permanent English settlement in
  North America in 1607
• Struggled to initially survive Malaria, interest
  in gold etc.
• John Smith came in and established strict work
  rules
• In 1619 settlers began to have a voice in govt
  could vote for reps in the House of Burgesses
• House of Burgesses marked the beginning of
  representative govt in the colonies

• Started by Pilgrims who wanted to escape the
  Church of England
• In 1620 they headed for Virginia on the Mayflower
  but ended up in Massachusetts
• Created the Mayflower Compact in which they
  promised to obey just and equal laws. Had an
  elected govt.
• Half the colonists died during the first winter
  Native Americans ended up helping
