Technical Matters
Video Quality Can use a tripod. Be sure that
all writing on board is captured and
legible. Camera pointed at speaker, whether
student or teacher. Zoom should be at widest
angle. Increased light will improve recording,
however avoid filming into direct light.
9
Technical Matters
Sound Quality Test camera microphone. Scoring
is difficult if you or students cant be
heard. If using external microphone Keep
microphone closest to action. Use paddle
microphone. Place microphone on mouse
pad. Eliminate noise that may interfere.
10
Technical Matters
Classroom set up for whole group
11
Technical Matters
Whole Class Have camera on side toward front of
class Try to set camera to give full view of
majority of classroom. Try not to follow
conversation. Place microphone on flat surface
toward majority of speakers in class.
12
Technical Matters
Classroom set up for small group
13
Technical Matters
Small Group Student interaction/collaboration. Y
ou are the facilitator Place camera with one
group or have camera hand-held. Show as many
participants as possible. Can zoom in and out as
appropriate Microphone in middle
14
Video Practice
Video Practice ExperimentWhats the best angle
for your classroom? Do multiple short takes to
make sure the students feel comfortable with the
camera. Watch yourself on other lessons before
you analyze your submission. Practice,
Practice, Practice
15
Video Analysis
Video Analysis Dont be too hard on
yourself. Keep analysis questions in mind or on
hand as you watch. Practice writing answers to
the questions in straight forward, non-technical,
non-teacher jargon. Reread your answers
later---Were you clear? Could you understand the
thinking if you did not know anything about the
unit? Have someone else read your answers.
16
For Submission
  • Choose the lesson and the class.
  • Have your video assistant available.
  • Make sure all equipment works.
  • Try not to have to use battery power.
  • Video tape the entire class block.
  • After taping, jot down notes on instructional
    challenges, objectives, success of lesson,
instructional materials, etc. for use in
    analysis.
  • Copy video.

17
For Submission
  • View video of lesson.
  • Write description of lesson, before and after,
    for written commentary.
  • Choose best minutes for submission.
  • Copy those minutes on to new VHS tape or DVD.

    commentary
  • Was your writing clear? Could you understand the
thinking if you did not know anything about the
    unit?
