- Best evidence of classroom practice
- Samples of different concepts, different
instruction, and different classroom interactions - Written commentary to set the stage.
- Two entries must feature different lessons from
different units. - Two different lessons from two different units
with two different groups of kids. - Authentic and complete view of your teaching

- PermissionStudent release form for each student
- EquipmentVideo recorder, NEW DVD or VHS
videotapeNo miniature formats - Use standard SP not EP, LP, or SLP format.
- Can submit on DVDspecific instructions in your
portfolio kit. - Microphonestest the sensitivity of the camera
microphone. You may need to use a separate one.

- Have a camera personusually an adult and
colleague - Media Specialist
- NBCT on your campus
- Colleague who is familiar with equipment
- Use equipment with which you are familiar
- Copy your recordings
- Make multiple copies of entire video
- Then , choose your 15 minutes

- Unedited minutes
- EDITED VIDEOS ARE UNSCORABLE!!
- Do not stop and restart.
- May be from beginning, middle, or end.
- Explain the setting in your written commentary
8Technical Matters
Video Quality Can use a tripod. Be sure that
all writing on board is captured and
legible. Camera pointed at speaker, whether
student or teacher. Zoom should be at widest
angle. Increased light will improve recording,
however avoid filming into direct light.

Sound Quality Test camera microphone. Scoring
is difficult if you or students cant be
heard. If using external microphone Keep
microphone closest to action. Use paddle
microphone. Place microphone on mouse
pad. Eliminate noise that may interfere.

Whole Class Have camera on side toward front of
class Try to set camera to give full view of
majority of classroom. Try not to follow
conversation. Place microphone on flat surface
toward majority of speakers in class.

group or have camera hand-held. Show as many
participants as possible. Can zoom in and out as

Video Practice ExperimentWhats the best angle
for your classroom? Do multiple short takes to
make sure the students feel comfortable with the
camera. Watch yourself on other lessons before
you analyze your submission. Practice,
Practice, Practice
15Video Analysis
Video Analysis Dont be too hard on
yourself. Keep analysis questions in mind or on
hand as you watch. Practice writing answers to
the questions in straight forward, non-technical,
non-teacher jargon. Reread your answers
later---Were you clear? Could you understand the
thinking if you did not know anything about the
unit? Have someone else read your answers.
16For Submission
- Choose the lesson and the class.
- Have your video assistant available.
- Make sure all equipment works.
- Try not to have to use battery power.
- Video tape the entire class block.
- After taping, jot down notes on instructional
challenges, objectives, success of lesson,
instructional materials, etc. for use in
analysis. - Copy video.

- View video of lesson.
- Write description of lesson, before and after,
for written commentary. - Choose best minutes for submission.
- Copy those minutes on to new VHS tape or DVD.
- View those minutes in context with written
commentary - Was your writing clear? Could you understand the
thinking if you did not know anything about the
unit? -
