Title: Road To Revolution II

1
Road To Revolution II
  • While the Stamp Act and Quartering Act were two
of the first issues the colonists had with the
    King, many more followed.
  • All of these problems led to American colonists
demanding their freedom, war and the start of a
    new country

2
The Townshend Acts
  • These were a series of laws that placed duties,
or taxes, on certain goods the colonies imported
    from Britain
  • Included glass, paint, paper and tea
  • Colonists responded, led by Samuel Adams, by
boycotting the goods that were taxed.
  • Because of the Townshend Acts, Britain was
actually losing more money b/c of loss of trade

3
Boston Massacre
  • Trouble started when some Patriots were insulting
and throwing rocks and snowballs at British
    soldiers.
  • A mob arose and knocked down a soldier. The
    troops panicked and opened fire.
  • 5 citizens died and enraged the colonists against
    the British even more

4
Boston Tea Party
  • In 1773, the Tea Act was imposed. It lowered the
price of British Tea, but still had a tax on it
  • Complete control of tea sales in the colonies now
belonged to the British East India Company.
  • On December 16th, 1773, 3 ships tried to unload
their tea. They were boarded by the Sons of
Liberty (a patriot group) that night and the tea
    was thrown overboard.
  • Led to other Tea Parties throughout the colonies

5
Intolerable Acts
  • A series of Parliament laws that the colonists
    found intolerable or unacceptable.
  • Intended to punish Massachusetts for the Tea
Party closed Boston Harbor till the tea was paid
    for
  • Mass. Government turned over to British control,
couldnt hold town meeting without permission

6
First Continental Congress
  • Because of the Intolerable Acts, the colonies
decided to get together for a meeting in
    Philadelphia to discuss the problems
  • They differed on many issues but were tied
together by their love of freedom and hatred of
    the King
  • They sent a letter to the King, asking for their
rights to be recognized and agreed to begin a new
    boycott of British goods.
