Vocabulary

• Custom- a usual way of doing things (like shaking
  hands)
• Immigrant- a person who comes to live in a
  country from some other place
• Ancestor- an early family member

• Isthmus- a narrow piece of land that connects two
  larger land areas.
• Wealth- riches, or money you have
• Religion- beliefs about God or gods

• Slavery- making one person the property of
  another person
• Poverty- being very poor
• Ethnic group- a group made up of people from the
  same country, people of the same race, or people
  with a common way of life.

• Culture- a way of life unique to an ethnic group
• Independence- freedom
• Government- a system for deciding what is best
  for a group of people.
• Democracy- a form of government in which the
  people rule.

• Representative Democracy- when elected officials
  vote to make decisions for all people.
• Majority rule- a way of deciding things (which
  ever side has more votes wins)
• Right- a freedom that belongs to a person.

• Responsibility- something that a person should
  do.
• Federal- national government
• Tax- money that a government collects from its
  citizens.
• Revolution- a large, sudden change in government
  or peoples lives.

• Declaration of Independence- an important
  statement about the freedom of our country.
• Constitution- a document that lays out a plan for
  our government.
• Legislative branch- makes laws

• Congress- the law-making group in the legislative
  branch.
• Executive branch- sees that all the laws passed
  by Congress are carried out.
• Judicial branch-sees that laws are carried out
  fairly.

• Supreme Court- the most important court in the
  country, decisions made here apply to everyone.

• Know some reasons why diverse groups of people
  came to the United States.
• Identify some things that make up a groups
  culture.

• What is majority rule (give an example)? What is
  a representative democracy?
• What are the 3 levels of government in the U.S.?

• What does the Constitution establish?
• What are the duties of the Legislative?
  Executive? And judiciary branches?
• How do all 3 branches of government work together
  to protect Americans rights?
