1
The question asked What are the characteristics
of formal patient education programmes, that can
show evidence for effect in patients with COPD
what are the outcomes and what are the patients
experience with a formal programme?
  • Method and theoretical frame
  • A systematic review of randomised and controlled
clinical trials from 1995-2003 of patient
education or self-management or decision support
    technique in patients with COPD
  • A focus group interview with patients at the end
of a 7 weeks rehabilitation programme including
    physical training
  • The theoretical frame is rehabilitation- and
    educational theory
  • Results
  • Despite difference in structure, content and
theoretical background there was evidence for
effects on very identical outcome - though small
    (grade B)
  • It is not possible to make recommendations
because of the wide variation in both structure,
    content and outcome
  • The patients regard education as part of a
rehabilitation program in which the physical
training is most important they called for time
to dialog with the experts and follow-up to
maintain the skills. They reported self-efficacy
managing stress and increased life quality,
    motivation and knowledge.
  • Conclusion
  • Patient education can successfully be conducted
    and organised in different ways!
  • In order to gain the most effective results for
the patients with chronic disease, the
    discussion appeal to include
  • modern rehabilitation theory individual
approach, involving relatives, short term goals,
    multidisciplinary self-help approaches or
    intensive care management
  • education theory self-management,
    self-efficacy, empowerment, komplians
  • Future questions and research
  • Does the type and intensity of exercise
    influence the learning process?
  • Would it make a difference if the relatives
    attend the programmes?
  • How do we teach the teachers self-management
    education? (problem solving skills, decision
    making, patient-provider partnership etc.)
