3
Motivation
  • Gaps in knowledge are a major barrier to the
    productivity of investigators
  • Addressing gaps in knowledge will promote sharing
of best practices and ultimately expedite the
    execution of clinical studies

4
Project
  • Develop online services to help investigators
access knowledge about expertise, best practices,
resources and tools, both locally and at other
    institutions
  • Collect knowledge through needs assessment,
workflow analysis and directory of institutional
    expertise

5
Investigator Portal
  • Investigator is guided through forms or menus to
    express a research need
  • Investigator is matched to potential resources,
    best practices, tools or experts
  • Investigator is tracked through the process, and
    asked to give feedback
  • Products from process are used to enrich the
    portal

6
Needs Identification
  • Investigators often need help to express what it
    is they need
  • Develop a common instrument, and survey
investigators regarding their needs in conducting
    their research
  • Classify needs and use this information to design
online request forms to help lead investigators
    through the process
  • Match needs to resources, tools and experts

7
Connecting to Experts
  • Often the best way to help an investigator is to
connect them to someone who can help
  • Develop techniques to create directories of
    expertise at each institution
  • Develop index terms to classify areas of
expertise (eg settings, methods and populations)
  • Derive from national databases, add from local
databases and customize with local experts

8
Sharing Best Practices
  • Can reduce reliance for direct human support by
    sharing knowledge online
  • Ask experts identified in the directories to
    contribute knowledge
  • Add knowledge as requests are posed and answered
  • Augment knowledge by studying the workflow of
    investigators and other stakeholders

9
Advantages
  • Try to create something of direct value to
    investigators
  • Collect information that can be used in annual
    reports
  • Collect information that can be used by
    evaluation group
  • Develop social network models and metrics
